it depends how much fitting they will actually be doing...if its literally unplugging the old one, removing it, refitting a new one and plugging it in...then yes, your getting raped

Thanks for replying, the price include the part and he said it a ten minute job once he gets the new part so you have confirmed my suspicions on this.
At first he said it was the crank drive sensor (or something like that), it would be £78.00 + labour so I said "if it fixes the car, go ahead". He did but it didn't work but he says I still have to pay for it but I don't see why?
Am I being unreasonable?

I think you need to take it to another mechanic.
Its pretty rare to randomly fry an ecu without doing something silly.

What happened was one morning it struggled to start a bit, the weather had turned so I thought perhaps its got a bit damp or something, then it struggled again when I went to leave work, (when I say struggled I mean the engine was turning over but it didn't fire up) I reached my destination , switched off the car, a few minutes later I went to start it again but it just wouldn't go.

yeah thats not a dead ecu..... at least id be very very shocked if that was the case. ID get a proper mechanic on it as this one sounds like he is having a laugh at your expense.
WHat have u checked?
Plugs, leads dizzy coil etc etc. maybe even worthwhile calling an auto electrcian to have a look

Thanks Fraz, I was thinking I'd have to change machanics as this ones had it for 2 weeks and has only managed to fit a part (badly) that I didn't need and he now insists I have to pay for it. do you think this is fair or should I stick to my guns and refuse to pay him? (baring in mind he still has the keys to the car)
well without some serious hassle it sounds like you need to pay him and get it back.

That sounds crap, I had an ECU go on my 1.4 when I first got it so had it changed under warranty, although I'm dubious whether it was the engine temp sensor. Car would start once warmed up.
Anyway, I've got a spare crank sensor, if it's patented, £78 is a lot of money.
I'd ask for the old ecu if that's been changed (or ask before he changed it so he cant claim he's thrown it away).
Dodgey start probs, last thing I'd look at would be the ecu, there's a list of small inexpensive parts and sensors to go through first. A VAG-COM error report would no doubt save time in the diagnosis.
had an ECU swapped on my Cupra (well previous owner did) cost £119 +VAT.. (£139.83) that was march 06.
The issue sounds similar to one I'm experiencing (not the mechanic). Car starts, sometimes stutters or stalls as you're pulling away. Almost like it's missing.

Definetly try the spark plugs or leads because it sounds like it is mis-firing or something. Ive had that experience and when your driving the car it feels like the thing wants to stall and stop.
I'd be looking at the dizzy/ignition system first off, dodgy ecu's dont normally result in the car not starting,
Also has the mechanic actually diagnosed what the particular fault with the ECU is as i would imagine it would be throwing up some fault codes for him to tell you whats wrong.
I'd really take it some where else.

doesnt sound like ecu. i was thinking crankshaft sensor if its not starting at all. if i was you i would get the car back asap and check the mileage like Cran said. You could also tell that mechanic to get a multimeter and check the voltage drop across the crankshaft sensor. make sure he does it infornt of you though so he cant lie.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to take it to another mechanic as many of you advise...just need to get it towed down there now!
