Hmmm...baffling indeed.

I assume your not running a custom ROM or rooted?

Have seen that this can cause issues with AA.

Have u had look on the Google forums for AA.

If ur based around Surrey/Hampshire/Berkshire borders I could take a look

Hi,

It is stock Samsung UI software, no custom roms or roots.

I am unfortunately in Buckinghamshire, but thanks anyway!

Have you checked permissions on your phone. Settings, apps, Android auto, permissions to check they are all ticked as I have a s8+ and a couple were not selected automatically and it wouldn't work
All the Permissions are ticked, it has all the permissions it requires...

Are you using the usb cable you got with your phone? Sometimes with a different usb, android phones will charge but won't connect for data. So worth trying with the original or at least a different cable.

Yes, I have used the OEM cable along with 2/3 other cables.

I have even tried a Micro USB with a USB type C converter.

I am truly baffled. I may just give up!!

Thanks for the suggestion though. I hear Android Auto is very sensitive with cables.

Strangely, AA only connects on my S8+ when I insert the USB-C cable in one particular orientation to the phone. If I flip it round... nothing.

Can’t explain that one

Don't have any issues on my S8+ though sometimes it does spanner and try and connect through mirrorlink. Do you get a message from the car it is connected through that? It will then prompt you to install some crap from the samsung app store and from experience just kill the phone.

What network are you on? If it has a networks custom firmware on the phone and its locked that might be causing some issues (as a guess) Also you can change the default between AA and Applelink on the car too, maybe worth a try putting that back to AA and see if that helps.

So I went in the car today, put my phone and charge, and by some complete miracle Android Auto loaded...

I had not done anything different from yesterday where it still would not work. Perhaps something on the phone updated overnight or something, but anyway long story short it now works, not a clue how, but it does!!

Many Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions. I am new to the forum and its great that so many people are happy to help!!

So we ended up being no help at all!!

Does not surprise me that it sorted itself out.

AA on my new Huawei (Android 8) would not connect at first. My old P9 (Android 7) was fine. Then I managed to get it to connect somehow but the connection was unreliable. Recently an AA update came out and Huawei also had an OS update. It is much better now, but stupidly cable sensitive. The only one that consistently works is a Samsung micro USB cable with the Huawei micro USB to USB C adapter.
This is a widespread issue even affecting Pixels.
There also was a SEAT Tech advisory to allow the head unit to boot up before connecting your phone.
Make sure you have the latest phone and AA update, 3.3.582054-release.

PS. I should add, that the USB ports seem to shut down for some time when trying to sort these issues out. I've had it go dead, only to connect fine an hour later.

Ive never had any issues with my A5 or the wifes S8. I normally do start the car up first then connect phone anyway and my phone updates apps daily overnight while on charge.

Check AA version on your wife's phone. Make sure it's the same Android 8 version. It may be a phone hardware issue too.
I got so sick of it I almost bought an I Phone X. I still might when this phone needs replacing. It'd be a shame though, the Pro 20 is a great phone.
