The attached pic is of one of my wheels after it sustained damage from a tyre being removed at a garage.

Has anyone else had such massive flaking?

I was gutted that it happened.

The garage couldn't understand how it had happened. The wheel was totally unmarked when it went in. Funnily enough though, the garage asked if I had painted them. Six weeks later (today) and I went to a place to see if it could be fixed and they also thought it had had an extra bit of painting. Wonder if SEAT have had a funny batch of wheels at some point.

The wheels on mine (06 Stylance Sport-up) are flaking a bit too but nowhere as bad as yours. The aren't immediately obvious but when i was cleaning them at the weekend i was suprised by the flaking on the edge of the spokes. To b honest, i never thought that the finish on the wheels was particularly good anyway. I have got some chips on parts of mine (not from kerbing:blink:) that just baffles. I can only think stone damage or something. The wheels are too easy to damage anyway even changing a wheel.

CupraDaft I think you should go to war with Seat.
That must be a manufacturing fault.
The last time I saw flaking like that, it was on an old rust bucket that was older than me.

Hope you get them fixed soon.

First thoughts are that the wheel has been refurbished and the 'new finish' is not as good as original, however whether that is the case or not the tyre place has been rough with the wheel and in my view they should sort it......

Got two of my wheels replaced by seat, spotted wee marks on the rims when cleaning which turned out to be water getting under the lacker which would have caused flacking eventually. Could be a reason to your flacking.

Did you buy car 2nd hand? as 99% of 18" get repaired by seller as they are VERY prone to kerbing!!

I agree the tyre place should pay to repair, i make a point of showing and telling garages all my alloys
are scuff free and any damage is caused by YOU! and you will have to rectify any damage caused.

Hi all.

Thanks for your thoughts. It is all a bit weird isn't it.

The garage that changed my tyre was my SEAT dealer. In absolute fairness to them, first they offered a new wheel which they actually had there at the time. I decided against it as it was a different colour and much shinier. They did also offer to fix the damage for me. They were great really.

I had one wheel that needed a wee bit of work on it last year and I didn't really like the colour match so I decided not to use the chap they would have brought in to do it. CANIS and another member on here told me of this other place (who I saw on Monday) and that is who is going to do the work. I've got another wheel that needs some work as I got run off the road last month in the Lake District by a coach going around a corner in my lane. So I'm going to Campsie Coachworks!

Campsie Coachworks is much cheaper than the dealer so I might just do all four wheels to match, make them a bit shinier rather than the matt look. I have been warned though that lots of paint layers does make the wheels more susceptible to chips...funnily worded but you know what I mean!! But hey, I'm already in that boat!

But all very weird. Car was brand new when I got it. The other wheel that needs done has the same flaking issue too, it is all very thick paint.

Thanks again everyone!

Sounds to me like the wheel has been refurbished, especially as you say that what should have been an identical new wheel from the dealer was a different colour

A Seat wheel flaking surely not.

Look in the MK1 section for LCR alloys. All 4 of mine had issues at one point with the lacquer/top layer. I don't think Seat have ever been bothered about their wheel finish.

I have found the same problem on my 18" rims. But not as bad as the top picture. But I have a problem on 2 wheels. The car is cleaned almost once a week. I have spoken to my local dealer who are going to look into it for me. After reading about the problems after being repaired I do know that those wheels were repaired by the dealer before they sold me the car.
