Well it's been there a while but thanks to some careless clutz at some time or another my passenger side rear door got a scratch in it about an 1.5 inches long.

Looking at it, it hasn't gone down to the primer from what i can see however if i run my nail over it in places it does catch. I've given scratch x a go a to a mild degree it worked in places but to me it is still very noticeable.

Any suggestions, some point late in the year i will be having the car detailed. Could machine polishing the car potentially remove it?

Sounds like it is just through the laquer? Has the colour changed? If so its down to the primer.

If you want to do it yourself you need some patience and a very fine paint brish and a pot of laquer, assuming its only through the laquer of course. I have done this myself with good results.

Keep building up layers of laquer in the scratch with the brush until its flush with the rest of the panel. Will take some time. Make the last coat slighty wider than the scratch. Then flat it all back with ever finer wet and dry, finishing on 2000 grit. Then polish and polish until its shiney like the rest of the panel.

Or if that sounds like too much effort get one of the chips and scratches people in to do it for you. Whatever you do get it sealed before water gets under the laquer and starts to lift it!
