Will changing the head unit improve the quality of the sound from the standard speakers? I have a speaker which cuts in and out from time to time, i will need to change it and if the sound can be improved from a better head unit i will just get a speaker from the local dismantlers.

Probably the most effective way to improve the speakers would be to upgrade their cable - if possible - the standard cable is no thicker than a pube.

There used to be an SCN member - owned a grey LCR? - who had an ICE company, and he reckoned that OEM LCR speakers are actually pretty decent.

I've got some new alpine door speakers if someone's interested. Had them for a while. They come with audiobahn tweeters. Should make a good upgrade. PM me if interested.

I've just upgraded the HU to a kenwood kdc-bt92sd and completely blown the sound. It's now really tinny and has lost all the warm bass that it had with the standard Aura HU.

As for the OEM speakers, I think I'm right in saying VW generally used to use Blaupunkt stereos in the cars as standard. No idea if that's still the case as I'm talking mk3's but I've always found the LCR speakers fine for a nice sound with limited/zero modding. Same in my old mk4 golf Gt Tdi.

are the LCR speakers any different to the LC speakers

Stick to the OEM speakers mate.
I have upgraded mine for Focals and there is no big difference in sound.
