hi, firstly i am not mechanical, so forgive me if descriptionn are wrong / off, please ask for further info if needed.

i am driving a 2001 leon, 120k miles.
recently i was behind a slow vehicle doing 20mph, i was in 3rd gear just plodding along smoothly, the car in front turned off, i went to put my foot down a bit and speed up and the car just stuttered, it didnt cut out or stall, it just didnt pull away as expected, it accelerated very slowly, and the engine light started to flash. i released the gas pedal, and dropped to 2nd gear thinking it just had a blockage and a bit of power would clear it, but it didnt.

i carried on driving home, noticing there was quite some vibration / shaking from the engine and through the gear stick. (when i popped the hood the whole engine was shaking, a passer by commented that it was "missing quite a bit"... is that misfiring?)

after a while of driving the engine light stayed on solid - the error then got weirder, sometimes i would drive and the car would feel nippier, like it was getting more power...?? (only slightly, but you notice these things i guess when driving a certain car for some time) but sometimes the car would struggle again and sort of lurch slightly, and then the loss of power would be back - i could get to 60mph ok, then it didnt really accelerate past that, (it crept up slowly, with toe right down to floor)

i notice the loss of power much more if going up an incline or going too slow in a higher gear (i can understand a car struggling, and the driver dropping down a gear, but this is ridiculous), so i avoid this as much as possible.

i want to get this fixed asap, but dont have a lot of funds. i cant be messing around with dealerships or garages gueesing, charging me and not fixing anything.

has anyone experienced this problem? does anyone know a fix? or anythign i can try that is cheap / free and then pay for the repairs when i know the problem?

its a petrol 1.6 16v engine
somebody mentioned coilpacks, and said i can check them by lifting them out and I will hear a "click" if they are ok? (assuming i will need tools to take the engine cover off? is that easy? is there some noob guide to do so?)

I dont have vag com, am based in north essex, near halstead.

It sounds like classic coil pack failure. But you need to check if your engine has 4 individual ones or one big coil with leads etc....

ok. thanks. how do I check coil packs? I have 4x visible spark plugs. and the rest of the block is all housed in. do I need to remove plastic covers? from top or side or where?

where can i get some cheap coil packs to test / replace?
a breakers yard or an online retailer? believe i have to change all 4 as can cause more problems changing one or 2...

IF you know its deffo the coil packs,
Why bother with a scrappy one..you don't know if that works.
Once 1 fails rest will follow..
I had 2 go recently within a week.
Best get in egay and get some cheap ones.

Are you sure you have 4 individual coil packs? Maybe you should post up a pic of your engine?

You can buy coil packs from Euro Car Parts, GSF or eBay! :)

i was booking car in for an MOT and asked about costs for replacing coil packs, mechanic said petrol car - 4 coil packs unless 1.4 engine..

Go to Euro Car Parts website and type in your registration....

It will bring up all the parts for your car...

Hi mate, those are your ht leads and the coilpack is the thing in the pic that they all connect too. The spark plugs are at the other end of those leads under the engine cover. Anyway from the pic you have got a coilpack for all of the engine in one rather than having 4 single ones like the more powerful cars. There are 2 availible on gsf for 2001 1.6 16v leon, one is standard quality and one is premium, if you're on a budget then the standard should be fine. The lump bolted to the side of the cylinder head behind the HT leads is the coil pack. There's only one pack containing two coils each with two leads on your engine. The four HT leads plug into the coil pack.

HOWEVER:

It could be the spark plugs or the HT leads, both of which have definite lifetimes and need replacing more often than coil packs.

Do you know if your spark plugs have ever been replaced? Or the HT leads?

In your position I'd pull out the plugs first and look at their condition, then look at the HT leads. Either of these should be cheaper than a new coil pack, and they both need replacing at regular intervals in any case. Spark plugs should be changed every 40K miles at the most.

you guys are awesome,
the spark plugs were supposed to have been changed when it last had a full service, (i am going by the paperwork and memory but will dig that out tomorrow)
what are HT leads? the rubber tube from the spark plug to the coil pack? doubt they have ever been changed... I am prepared to change spark plugs, the rubber tube bits and the coil pack and hopefully that`ll sort it all out....think will have a go over the weekend.
mty12345 - thank you for linking to the coil pack, where can i get HT leads from?
judging from the pics these 3 items look pretty straighforward to do, anything more mechanical and it may have to go to a garage...

the coil pack on gsf stats "without igniter" - is that right? do i need something else too?
Also do the spark plugs need plugging into it a certain way (the way it currently is, or does it not matter?)

Change one spark plug at a time so you don't mix the leads up as this would affect the firing order and make the engine run like crap.
