Just sent the email to the dealer asking to buy back my 184 DSG. If only they did 24hr test drives like Lexus, Peugeot etc. The Cupra is a good car but a bit over hyped. In my humble personal opinion is that the 184 DSG and it's mean torque band means is just as fast with less effort in everyday driving. I'll just need to do a motorway blast every week to keep the DPF in tip top shape.
Sorry Cupra Lads

I hear what you saying mate but as standard the 184 produces an extra 22lb ft more than the 280 at much lower revs. I feel that the extra grunt is easier to access than revving the tits of the Cupra then your sunndenly at 3 figure speeds!I have just come from a bmw 330d remapped much faster than a 184 dsg with way more torque and I am blown away with my 280 cupra am running 530nm of torque. the 184 only has 380nm standard just remap the cupra and you want look back at the diesel these engines produce very good torque.
Good reply! I would love an C63 AMG but running costs would be astronomical! I've driven the Cupra very hard and it is a mean piece of machinery. I certainly don't treat like I'm driving a diesel and I've driven many powerhouse cars all the way up to 911 turbos, R8 etc.Interesting thread. I can't fault my Cupra 290. You guys who are complaining about grunt must have something wrong with your cars?? I've driven diesel torque monsters like merc 350d, Audi 3.0 tdi and BMW 125d, 330d and most recently a 335d xdrive (boring as ****)but I actually think the Cupra has similar low down shove characteristics to a powerful turbo diesel or v6 petrol engine, BUT also has serious pace over 4K rpm. Petrol V8 Has both!
You guys complaining must be driving in the wrong gear or your car is knackered or maybe need decent front tyres.
I think the only car I've driven with similar pace is an e39 M5 with 400 Bhp and m140i (shite handling though)
For comparison, 335d allegedly 0-60 in 4.8, Cupra FWD 5.7. If you're into top trumps get the 335d for the traffic light Grand Prix. But take the 335d out back to back with the Cupra and it's a different story. At any speed over 30 where the Cupra has traction, the Cupra gathers speed quicker than the diesel, and also feels quite a bit quicker. Hardly scientific but I was very surprised.
Don't drive the Cupra like a diesel, use the rev range and I think you might fall in love again; If not get an old E63 AMG and throw it sideways.
Just my 2pence worth
I do! Fed up of downshifting to get the into the power!"Don't drive the Cupra like a diesel, use the rev range"
+1 on this comment

Many times, surprised it the power tails off rather than the constant hammering that you used to get when hitting the limiter on cars of old.Did you even hit the electronic limiter ?

I find mpg doesn't change much whether I'm driving around in upper rev range or lower, it's still about 31 average. My logic is therefore to enjoy the rev range. I also find it amusing that it can take a 10 mph junction turn in 3rd without feeling like the engine is about to fall out, then foot down and you can leave it in 3rd up to nearly 100 pulling nicely, on the autobahn of course

I met up with a cool guy from the forum with a lovely Cupra ST DSG. He took me for a wee spin and the gearbox certainly makes the car. Unfortunately my mind has been made up and I'm going back to 184. I'll maybe get the tuning box to take the 184 to 500nm.

If I get my old car back it will be out of official warranty and I know the car os strong as I owned it from new. Going by fellow fellow forum members the wee chip box seems to be a good option.I thought tuning was a no-no for you? You've changed your tune.
And also - you're out of your mind if you think the 184 is anywhere near the Cupra at any speed. It's way off.
