First of all, I wasn't 100% if this was the correct forum for this type of question or not so I apologise in advance if it's not.

Some idiots keyed a good few cars in my street last week and one of them happened to be my pride and joy. I've been to a few bodyshops and I've been quoted £150 to have the whole passenger side of the car re-sprayed. I'm not sure if this is a good price or not? It sounds reasonable seeing as the keyed part of the car stretches from just above the rear wheel arch to just pass the front passenger door handle.

I just have a few questions to ease my fear really and was hoping you'd be able to answer a few. Is £150 a reasonable cost from a bodyshop to have it sprayed? And my main question/fear is will I be able to see a difference? I don't want to pay £150 and then be able to see a subtle difference in my original black (which I think is metallic "black magic" apparently) and the black that has been sprayed on. That will just annoy me to the max.

Unfortunately it's too deep to be T-Cut and polished out, and whilst for a few hours yesterday I did consider attempting to spray it myself with a can from Halfrauds - after reading a few of the search results from Google I decided I didn't have 1) the balls and 2) the expertise.

I've not even contacted any of the Stealers as I've just assumed it's going to be more than £150 through them.

Sorry for the big block of writing, just wanted to include anything that may be helpful and hopefully some of you would be able to help with the answers.

Thanks guys, Ben.

I've had the full rear bumper re-sprayed as, unfortunately, a while back I was in a bit of a smash on the motorway where I ended up in the middle of the far side lane with my front bumper 200 yards behind me and a big hole in my rear bumper where the bolt on the central reservation had caught ti and ripped it to pieces.

To cut a long story short, it cost me about £450 quid for a new front FR bumper with the grills, both front headlights and my rear bumper melted back to it's original state and re-sprayed.

All in all, £150 aint to bad.

£150 seems like a good price to me (especially as it's over two panels) :

It cost me £350 to have the nearside rear quarter panel sprayed when I slid in ice and touched a wall (no panel deformation, just paint) - in certain lights I can see very subtle blend marks - but a bit of extra glaze and wax hides it - the colour match is perfect.

and £150 when some pleb of a dustbin man ran a wheeliebin into my tailgate, denting it - so that was for some filling and respray of the whole panel. Because the whole panel was resprayed, any colour variation is completely unnoticeable.
x
P.S. My car is also black magic.

£150 does seem too cheap.

and your lucky that yours is black as there cant really be variations of the colour, tints etc.

just make sure they use enough hardener or it will take weeks to before it stops marking with just a nail etc

This scratch on 3 panels?
If so 150 is defo too cheap and you prob won't be happy with the job....

How deep is the scratch? Does your nail catch it?

Said on here before I'm a vehicle appraiser...to paint a panel we cost 120 quid....

So for a good job 120 per panel....360 quid...

I'd have a look at previous example of their work before getting it done from them as it is far too cheap. I just paid £120 to have my door done at a discounted rate.

If you start worrying, just get a few quotes from other places. That way you'll be able to work out if it seems a bit dodgey.

Also just noticed you said "front passenger side door panel" I had presumed earlier you had a 3 door, which would be over two panels.

When you run your fingers over it you can feel it, only just slightly but you can feel it. I'll see if I can upload a picture to give you an idea of the damage. I know you can't see how deep it is, but just so you have an idea of what I'm dealing with.

Good idea to get a few more quotes to work out the average price, just to check if it's too good to be true etc. I have work the whole weekend but will check around on my day off on Monday to see if I can get estimates. Whilst on the subject of estimates - does anyone have any experience with decent body shops in the South West, Plymouth kinda way or maybe Exeter?

I have a three door hatchback so I think it's just two panels? I'll check the pics now as too cold to go outside haha.

To the eye it doesn't look mega deep....know anyone with a proper orbital machine polisher that could flat n polish the panels for you? May be worth a try before plumping cash to paint the panels...

If your nail catches a ridge on the scratch tho then you'd be looking at paint...

paintwork before the scratch being there does'nt look great anyway tbh. Maybe try the polisher route first and it might tidy it up a bit.

i paid 340 to have my bonnet & front bumper painted after some little pr1ck threw some sort of paint stripper all over it. & in that price he did my colour coded mirrors, sprayed the black bits on the front bumper for me & fitted my lcr splitter. i did get that at a discounted price though as i know the bloke & my mum had her full car painted there a month or so before. everywhere else wanted 400 just for the bonnet & bumper.

You haven't anything to lose, so why not try touching in by brush? I've had great success with similar but shorter (200mm ish) scratches, touching in the colour first, rubbing down, then lacquer and more rubbing down. Mine is 'Zenith', basecoat and lacquer, and I don't know about your 'Black Magic', but these days, I'd guess it's lacquered too. As I say, this has worked for me, with the a/m scratch, and a bad bit of chip repair on the C pillar, done by the dealer's 'expert'. Go on - give it a go - it won't cost much except time and patience (it's v fiddly!).
