Apparently the 1.4TSI 'Twincharger' will lose the supercharger.

Looking at a article on the AutoCar website:

"For the next Golf, VW will also make major engineering changes to the 1.4-litre ‘twincharger’ engine, the EA111.

As exclusively revealed earlier this year by Autocar, the twincharger will lose its supercharger to continue in production as a soft-turbo petrol engine rated at 150bhp from a single exhaust-driven blower. It will be renamed the EA112."

Different article:

"Undergo refinements and more civil motor 1.4 TSI. The engine will be deprived of a mechanical supercharger, leaving one to increase the power turbine. But even despite this, the motor output will rise from the current 140 to 150 hp. Likewise, Volkswagen will produce the power plant to re-index the EA111 to EA112."

This has been rumoured for a while. Its a shame about the reliability issues as it used to be quite a good engine. The original 170PS TSI in the Golf GT (June 06) was excellent, but the newer EU5 160PS and 180PS versions are proving to be very troublesome.

I would of thought the due to the turbo kicking in after 3500 rpm the supercharger doesn't actually have any input into the peak power produced????
Therefore they won't fit a larger turbo to the 1.4 as the current one is capable of producing the power and will more likely opt for a 1.6 turbo for the 'fast' models?..

Or I could be talking crap!

id agree with that. the turbo charger they choose might have to be smaller to ensure no lag. they'll no doubt make other parts more efficient to cancel out the small turbo top end loss

The twincharger is an expensive engine I think, I can understand they remove it from the non sporty versions to save some money and just dump in the version without the charger.
This doesnt change anything for Cupra's, GTI's, A1's, etc.

So i take it they will use new pistons etc to cope with the misfire issues experienceed on the current tsi engines? If not, what's the use of removing the charger, apart from cost, if the problem could potentially still persist?

You have to remember according the VW and Seat there is no problem with the engine officially ;-)

I think with removing the charger they think that this will solve the problems? I am not a motor engineer but the refinements on the new supercharge systems in the brand new cars seem to having less problems than the older ones. I have no idea how but maybe the supercharger is related somehow?

I can only think that more fuel is needed with the charger at lower RPM thus the over fuelling and killing the plugs?

Someone please correct me if I am talking absolute **** :)

Get ypur petrol FR's while you can and flash the ECU's! I bet the ones from 2012 will only have a turbo! Same peak figures but cheaper to produce as they loose the charger!

You think the TSI FR's will drop alot in price if that happens?

i would think that VAG will develope a 1.6T to compete in WRC with one of the brands going forward and this will find its way into the cupra models...

that is what i am hoping as the polo r that VW are using in 2013 in WRCC will have the 300BHP 1.6 turbo engine so hopefully a detuned version of about 200BHP should find it's way to the cupra model. I am hoping they make the anouncement at Frankfurt in September at the motor show when they introduce the new LEON too.

 LOL. I am but if SEAT introduce the 1.6 turbo I could quite easily be swayed tbh. It all depends on what announcements they make.

Not strictly correct...

this was the reply, courtesy of scirocconet.co.uk. Derek has done well getting a reply I think:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us on behalf of Scirocco.net and your members. We appreciate that forums such as yours are a really valuable source of information for vehicle owners and drivers and are always happy to offer information when requested.

We have received reports that a number of vehicles with the 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS power unit have experienced certain issues with engine performance. We would advise anyone who has a car with this engine and is experiencing any kind of pinking, misfiring or unusual running to contact their nearest Volkswagen Retailer for advice and an engine management software update if necessary. Details of how to contact us can be found on PLEASE REGISTER OR LOGIN TO VIEW LINKS. Please be aware that if an owner has had their engine ‘tuned’ that they should make this clear before any diagnosis or subsequent work is carried out. This would need to be taken into account before any remedial action is suggested as any work or software updates could affect the functioning of the ‘chip’ or have a detrimental effect on the engine itself.

All our franchised Retailers have technicians who are trained to deal with problems arising with our vehicles, and we trust them to deal with any complaints in a professional way. If you have any specific examples of cases in which your members have not received the level of service they would expect from Volkswagen, please do ask them to contact us via our customer care centre on 0800 0833914.
