Are puncture repairs worth it?

Hey folks,

Turns out there is a slow puncture in the left passenger side rear tyre, I just wondered if it's worth having it repaired? Or just to buy a new tyre?

I always buy tyres in pairs, so i'd end up having to buy 2, and the guy at the garage said the front 2 will need doing, and that the rear one could be fixed.

So im thinking 4 x new tyres
He is thinking 2 x new tyres + 1 repair on rear tyre

Are puncture repairs worth it? I always think of some bodge job when it comes to 'puncture repair' Do they last as long as the tyre normally would afterwards?

Problem is, the guy doesn't do the tyres himself, he was just the mechanic, and he wasn't completely sure it was a repairable puncture, but seemed a bit reluctant to tell me i'd need to replace the tyre.
I don't have time to drive to a garage, or have tyres fitted at work, only to be told 'Sorry it's not repairable, you should have bought another 2 as well...'

As for tyres, looks like i'll be going for P-Zero Nero's again, might as well, the F1's are a bit pricy, and the Pirelli's are on what was on there from new.

i think they need to take the tyre off to check if it has cut on of the wire cords in the tyre, but i got a tyre repaired for 8 quid and it lasted just the same as the other ones on my car.

Yup should be fine after a proper puncture repair! Not just plugging it but patching from the inside then grinding to match & of course rebalancing well... Had 1 tire patched 3-4 times until I replaced the set at 60k kilometers!!! Was in the process of moving. The area I was moving to wasn't yet paved at the time. Since it was a new street with a sting of new houses under construction... Lots of nails & screws!

I want a job where you work seany, you get a puncture and put two new tyres on ? i think you just like spending money !, maybe £10 to fix a puncture versus £150 for new tyres, go with a repair every time

Don't go for the Neros again, they're crap! I ended up going for the Toyo PX-4's on mine, but then again I went to Elite in Rainham for those as I was down that way anyway. So far, they seem to be ok, but I'm not sure whether I'd go for them again as they're not really a "summer tyre" as such.

Go to kwik fit when they're quiet and while they're repairing it ask out of interest how much a new set would cost and sound like you'll be back for them.
I don't think I've every paid to have a puncture repaired at a kwik fit before.

Ah ok, sounding more like a repair jobbie then!

I might also get a second opinion on the fronts, it's not that I have money to throw away, I just didn't want to jeopardise tyre safety for the sake of a new tyre.
Saying that, 2 tyres sounds better than 4

Hey Ken, ah ok, I'll prob give the Nero's a miss then, I just got lost in the selections! If it's only 2 i'll prob get Eagle F1's, I had them on my MK3 Cupra and they were great tyres, seemed to last ages as well, contrary to many reviews that say otherwise.

I just thought a repair would cost about £25 or something

Repairs are always worth it ive been going strong on a repaired tyre for 12000 miles now and never looked back. Now im forced to purchase new tyres due to wear. Im looking at EF1's too

Puncture repairs are only about £9 at my local place - so anytime I've had a slow puncture (Twice) I just take it there.

Ok! Update!

2 Nails in the tyre, both close together, but the guy said he could fix it as one hadn't 'gone through'.
Unfortunately, he then noticed the side was bulging from being driven flat for some time, and had warped the tyre, so he said it needs replacing.

I didn't realise Cupra's come with a FULL 17" Spare tyre and alloy! So he put that one on, so im now faced with the following;


The 2 fronts DEFINATELY need changing - so that will be done.

However, for the rest I can do;

A) Keep the replacement spare wheel on the rear, it's still a P-Zero Nero, just like the other rear tyre, only difference is, this is new and the other is more worn... Not sure if thats going to be worth doing? I guess all it means is, I will have to change both rears when the other rear needs doing... Thus not getting a full lifespan from that replacement tyre.

I will then have to get a replacement for the new spare wheel in the boot (the one which has the punctured tyre on...)

B) Replace 4 tyres and put the spare wheel back in the boot.

For the record, I got a really good quote... £325 for 3 continental tyres. Bargain!
You can guess where that quote was from! And it included a 30% discount!

I recently bought a set of 205/40/R17 Toyo T1-R tyres for £220 delivered. Only cost me £30 to get them fitted, new valves and balanced. The tyres give great grip in the dry and are pretty good in the wet too.

I was having a look at those mate, cheapest price I got was £306 for 4 fitted and balanced.

I was also told I couldn't get 215/40/17's on there, and i'd have to get 225/35/18's instead ( with new wheels lol) I know im from Essex, but we don't all have 20" Wheeled Corsa's.

Just after replacing the standard pzero neros after 9K with Toyo proxy 4's. Got them from camskill, very inpressed so far, good for the price.
