I am looking at one of these tommorrow. Could you tell me what faults to look for? Also does the 1 litre engine have enough power or does it struggle to get up hills on the motorway?
Its a 2002 with 16,000 miles on it. Its up for £3,000

They are only little engines, so will never be fast, but they cope perfectly well with hills and motorways and such like :) Fuel economy can be high when on the motorway, but round town you should get plenty of miles to a tank - I usually get 230-50 before filling up, and mine seems to use more than most! Just got 260 this weekend :D

Faults...I can't think of any immediately on the 1.0s, they seem pretty bulletproof. They all suffer from idle hunting, but that can usually be cured by cleaning the throttle body...
Pedal boxes are a weak design, but I can't think of one going on a 1.0, usually 1.4's or 1.6 Lupos seem to suffer.

Bodywork wise, check for rust and signs of bubbling paint. Look over the usual stuff you would on any other car :)

They are great little enignes imo.

Very good round town especially, you dont seem to need to change gear as often as in most cars.

Out of town they are fine, they like to sit at 60 more than 70+ and they do seem very good on fuel at 60MPG.

Mine usually averages about 38-43MPG but thats nearly all town work, doing short runs.

The 1.0 engines are usually very strong and as long as they are looked after they are very reliable. But i wont mention the issues with mine, but they were a one off, so im told

Anyway thats a really good price i think and very low mileage. Is it a 1.0 base, or 1.0S?

The 'S' model is the one to go for.

Lunalupi mentioned rust on the rear wheel arches, this can be an issue with MK1 arosa but the one you are looking at will be a mki2 so it shouldnt rust, they are galvanised, and have a 12 year anti perforation warranty on them.

I carnt really think of any common problems really.

But make sure its had a cambelt change, its every 40K or 4 years, i would risk going over that recommended time.

Best thing to do is take it for a spin? Then you can 'feel' what power it got.

Best to check EVERYTHING, from windows going up and down to leaks under the bonnet. ;)

She has now decided on a VW Polo 1.2. We took one for a test drive and it does not run smooth on tickover. Is this normal for a 1.2, 3 pot petrol?
cheers

I wouldn't say its normal for a car of that age / mileage, might just need tweaking a bit.

How much if you don't mind me asking? If its low, probably explains why??

how old are ou buddy, i'd go for the 1.4 16v as it has a little bit more bhp and a little bit more torque. i know that a lot of people on this forum have the 1.0 model but i'd definately start at the 1.4 depending on your age

We went for a Polo 1.4 S in the end.
