the dreaded engine light..

MOT in November luckily as just returned an OBD2 code reader that despite being bought by 1000s of people looks like more of a hoax to me - i.e. - it didn't work.
So in desperation i'm trying to get some positive help to save my car.

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced OBD2 reader that i can buy that works?
or.. Can anyone recommend a Seat/VW etc garage/dealer in South London/Surrey i could go to as a last resort?
or.. Can anyone offer a guess (impossible ask really) as to what tends to fails more than anything else?
It's a 2004 1.0 Arosa with just under 50k miles on it, and i've cleaned the throttle body and checked the EGR valve so far.
I am retired trade but it's been many years and all the people i would normally have tapped up for help are similarly retired long ago or ill or no longer around plus things have "moved on a little".
It's a cracking little car but not worth spending a fortune on. Ideally i would like to get someone to tell me what codes are logged but i doubt many garages would even entertain this now.

Thanks in anticipation.

i can sadly report that this Forum appears to be effectively dead as far as interest in older models go. Ditto for the "other" Seat Forum it appears, so reluctantly i'm off to the "Lupo" forum from now on.
For anyone who reads this in the next 12 years or more, i fixed the problem myself as usual but it took a lot longer due to my age and inability to understand computers and software in generl now.
Can highly recommend the Foxwell NT301 fault code reader, it was £42 with an offer and went straight to the job, and also erased the EMS light as fault was flagged until removal apparently so the cleaning of throttle body and EGR appears to have worked as fault was concerned with Purge etc.

Ive always got down to the bottom of fault codes coming up on a 2017 Ateca with Obdeleven it googles the code type of thing. Make a note of it and do your own googles. It is the Pro version but I believe its the same whether Pro or not.

Pass on how Obdeleven works on cars prior. Ateca is built on a Golf 7 platform. Basic youd look at your platform. Arosa in your case... so the coding will be in that. So you eyeball associate models. One thing is fault reporting the other thing is coding. That's a subject in itself.

There you go a Lupo

This platform

I never got into coding and fault finding till I got the Ateca. By that stage Obdeleven had taken off as an easy fault finding coding device. The company is a bit hot on marketing so you have to pick your way through that.

Our friends with MQB Evo platforms get many more errors 😉. So anyhow you bunch the cars up on platforms and it look like you found your volume car 👍 ... Lupo.
