We shop around every year and move most years. You can't use comparison sites as they don't give you the same prices as you get by phoning directly.

Getting loads of quotes is a pain in the neck and everybody hates doing it. Insurance companies know this and hope you are lazy enough to think that because you found them cheaper last year you'll assume they're still the cheapest, won't bother phoning round and they put your premium up every year. The diffidence can be hundreds, it was on my car last year.

We always stick with the big guys. If you do need them the service you get is typically better, they have huge resources. Direct Line, Admiral, Esure, Churchill, usually one of those. Sometimes we'll be with the same company two years in a row but it is unusual.
Also, make sure you 'shop around' with plenty of time before your renewal date.
Shopping around with only a few days until your renewal is due will get you a higher quote than shopping around with a month to spare!

I also stick with the larger well known companies and I check out customer reviews / feedback on their claims service; if you’re unfortunate enough to need to claim you want good service and excellent quality of repairs, so checking out the reviews can help give that reassurance - assuming the reviews are genuine of course 🤔.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that as with most things, if the premium’s the cheapest, then it might be cheapest for a reason (poor customer service, lower levels of cover, poor claims service), so going with the cheapest company isn’t necessarily the best option.

It's not just car insurance that has risen. I combine car and house insurance for a discount, and this years quote was £200 higher. That was dropped to £100 extra with a phone call though. I tried 2 or 3 brokers that were supposedly specialists, and they were more expensive. One of them became quite snotty, when I asked why.

Trustpilot is a great place to start. Bear in mind people are much more likely to leave a negative review over a positive one, so if they have lots of positives it's a really good sign. If a company has a 4+ rating on there, they're golden.
