Back Box Sound

Hi All,

Have just had my back box fitted and have started up the car to find that its almost quieter than the engine..It wasn't the sound i expected after having the same style on a mini...is it the fact that the centre box is still there? would that make such a difference? Is there a way to make it louder? Also the back box was fitted with the information sticker still stuck on it..it seemed to get very hot so will the sticker burn off and will it cause damage if it does?

mate, ive got a custom backbox on my 1.2 and the backbox is pretty loud.
Should imagine it should be louder on ur 1.4

I had it put on at exhuasts uk and im no expert but i think the backbox is just bolted on.

i no this sounds quiet a random sort of thing but have you checked that the system is connected properly? i.e the pipework connected to the backbox correctly?

You have just answered your own question, the centre box will be what is making it quieter! You dont normally get a huge increase in exhaust noise just by fitting a backbox!

Ok, i have been under the car and can't feel any leaking air accept for where it comes straight out of the engine which i can't really get too.

Ok thank you dozza i wasn't sure how much of a difference a centre box would make, i was just hoping it wouldn't be that much? Is there a way to get round that (apart from removing the centre box cos i believe thats illegal?)

It also cost a fair bit so not getting a much bigger sound seems to have been a bit of waste of money! So are there aftermarket centre boxes? Thanks

I got mine at Sounds Of Silence in Falkirk for £200, but most garages and tuning sops can custom make them.

Hi, So if i were to remove the centre box is it just a case of bending a piece of pipe of the same diameter to join up the back box to other end etc....would i also lose a lot of back pressure?

Yeah that would work! As far as I'm aware its not illegal to remove the centre box in the exhaust, only to de-cat it, if one is fitted! You would only loose a lot of back pressure if you dramatically increased the bore of the pipes! Hope that helps!

Thank you, i think there is a de-cat fitted, i guess as there isn't any cutting involved in removing the centre box so may as well give a go at removing it.....i hope its not illegal but if i get stopped police give three days (for me to put it right! )

Hi mate!

I had the same backbox on my Mini. twin 3inch DTM. It sounded awesome! Used to set off car alarms and everything. It was amazing. But yours won't sound anything on an Ibiza. The Mini you would've just had the backbox. On the Ibiza you have a catalyst - a centre box AND THEN the back box. Both of which will quieten it down a lot.

I didn't use to boot it around here. I remember once I left my mates house in town - his mum had a few of her friends around. Gave it a bit of foot leaving his house and set his mum's friends car alarm off!
