Hi,

So when driving for a while now a bad sound is coming from the car like driving over the white line separating the hard shoulder on the motorway - just not as loud.

Took my car in thinking it was a wheel bearing and having picked it up they are telling me the gearbox is gone and the noise coming from the Diff. Its hard to say as there is not much change in noise when cornering and its not clear which side its coming from.

Should i get a second opinion? I have tried the various bearing checks when jacking the car up but feel no movement at all.

Is this a common problem??? 121K miles on the clock on a 51 plate V5 20V model.

You haven't flat spotted a tyre have you? Might be worth checking?

Took it in for a second opinion

Right wheel bearing was replaced and its running smooth again.

This first place was a VAG specialist.

Thanks for the replies though.

Glad to hear that you had it sorted out. A similar thing happened to me. It turned out to be a rear wheel bearing as well as a front one. When the specialist went on about the gearbox I was ready to ditch the old girl.
