Just had my ibiza recovered to the local dealership after a rather loud bang and a cloud of smoke flew out the exhaust there was oil all over the road and the back of the car.

It's only an 06 but I've done 64k what do you think my chances of persuading seat UK to buy me a new turbo are?

Warranty is only upto 60,000 miles isnt it? If the dealer is feeling generous, you might get the turbo replaced if it has gone as its only 4k over.

Lets hope it's just the turbo boost pipe thats popped off cos Listers in Cov are charging me £80 for the privilege of letting me know whats wrong before they lift a finger. They did say that they thought the turbo had gone cos of all the oil coming out of the exhaust. James Bond eat your heart out smoke screen and oil slick all at the same time!

If they are going to charge you for it, they can tell you it's anything they want!!

Cost of re-attaching TIP: Couple of quid

Cost of replacing turbo & associated parts: almost priceless!

Did any dash lights come on at the point of the 'pop'? By the sound of the volume of oil you have got on the back of the car it sounds more terminal than a blown off TIP, but without seeing it who can say.

If your car has been serviced on the nail within the dealer group (seeing its a high miler for its age), you may have some case to push for a contribution from SEAT as its so recently out of warranty mileage (60k / 3yrs).

Best of luck, and try and keep calm whatever your likely to be told as recently we hear of the odd horror story with dealers where customers don't see eye to eye with them. While they're on your side, your still winning!!

Was it white, or black smoke? question will soon be answered as to if it was a turbo, or boost pipe leak then!

Listers in Coventry have just quoted me £1700 near enough to fit a new turbo but are putting a good will request in for me they say there was a mechanical fault with the turbo but gave me no more info. They reckon that there may be engine damage any ideas how likely this is?

Has anyone else had a turbo go pop?

Cheers for all the help

Andy

I guess oil starvation would be the main worry? For £1700, isn't it worth going for some sort of upgrade? :D

If the garage has said it was a dodgy turbo, then id kick off big time with Seat UK until they pay for it all. 4,000 miles out of warrenty yes, but im sure a few nice worded letters, with the added "Im sure the papers, mags would love to hear about this" would do it.

If however you want to bite the bullet, dont let a Seat garage do the bloody work, rip you off and give you a re-con unit.

Ring up a few places, even if its just to get standard parts back on, get the garret turbo, and take it elsewhere!

Thats what I was thinking but I think a bigger turbo and remap would probably be a bit more than £1700

don't forget an uprated clutch  add circa £800 inc. fitting (depending on what you go for) plus insurance

are we talking petrol of deisel? which model?

poss add an FMIC????

The lovely guys at Listers Seat in Cov won't do any work till I give them any money and have lied to me about what Seat UK told them Seat UK won't consider any claim unless all the work has been done. So was in a bit of a catch 22 until if found out that if you have bought the car on hire purchase you are covered for anything major under the supply of goods (implied terms) act 1973 for 6 years from the date of purchase. I'm waiting to hear back from VW financial services and hoping they will fix it. It's worth buying the car on HP and paying it off straight away for that kind of peace of mind!

Still I'm missing the car and it looks like I'll be stuck with my brothers yaris 1.0l for the next fortnight!

sorry to hear your story - I had a similar problem over on the tdi forum in the last couple of weeks when mine gave up after 83k miles. The dealer charged 1300 to do the job and the boost pipe has blown apart twice since! (nothing to do with what they did though )
