I'm trying to find a slow battery drain by putting a multimeter in series with the earth off of the battery. Only thing is every time I connect the multi meter the alarm goes off and won't turn off with the key until I re-connect the battery properly. Am I doing something wrong??

first thing is how long is the drain taking, how often do you use the car, and the reason the alarm is going off is because it is seeing the battery being removed and tripping the it, as the siren has battery back up, and it will only turn off when you refit battery so the alarm itself has power to disarm, i dont know of a way to put the alarm into a service mode or switch siren off for this test,

It runs out if the car is not used for about 3 days. Jump it and drive and it'll be fine so don't think it's alternator related. There are a few other problems that it could possibly be related to; passenger door doesn't unlock with central locking always, fuel gauge is temperamental, and with all that rain the door seals leaked a lot and I'm guessing there are electrics under the carpet. Was hoping I could put a multimeter across and just unplug things til I found the drain.

No you won't find it like pal, if things were wet a fuse may blow, is there any aftermarket equipment installed even if it's just a cd tuner is the alarm the factory one or aftermarket

Here is a thought start the car switch everything on in the car check charge rate should be above 13.2 volts. Also check earth strap on engine and dis you you know that from each time you start the car it takes roughly 20 mi s to replace the amps used to charge the car, so if you only use it a few times a week and do short journeys it could just be this causing it

Check to see if the courtesy light in the boot does not stay on after it is closed and the car switched off.
Remove the parcel shelf to view. Sometimes the light does not switch off and slowly drains the battery, driving the owner insane looking for faults. Something quick to check and remedy temporarily by removig the bulb.
