Just been informed the big end has gone on my Leon 55 plate FR+ TDI 150 with 77,000 miles (owned from new Jan 06 and driven fairly hard)

What are the options?

:cry::cry::cry:

The Run down

Friday running fine to work 9am 5miles no problem

set out from work 2:30 start up ok 1500k revs very rough, pull over idle is rough, no light on dash switch off, check oil, at bottom of stick put 1l of oil in, over top of oil gauge, too much

run for 5 mins on idle sounded like manifold had come away, noise goes, drive home then to the lakes 100 miles on motorway no problem car is sat for 2 days, then drove home no problem cruising around 90 on the clock 85 on the sat nav got home, no issues, then went out for a meal with the family and pulling out of a junction the noise started and there was masses of smoke behind, 300yds later on idle, no smoke, running fine then even on throttle!.

2 days later after regular use and stopping for a late lunch at start up, the noise begins again over roughly 1300 revs.

the car was booked in for Monday but I decided to surrender it at that point and idled it over and now it maybe the big end!

my neighbour a lex lease engineer has just said a minority are renound for the oil pump drive failing and that could have caused it, under them it would have been a warranty item ie new build.

Big end.? As in big end bearings.? Is your engine knocking.?

not all the time, the last time I saw it yes. 30 mins before I dropped it off it was doing 90+ on the motorway without any issues whatsoever with great acceleration then I stopped for 5 mins and the problems start

If its the big end bearings then they would all you would need to replace, may be the crank if its been damaged but all it may need is a polish, it sounds a bit more like the turbo, with the smoke you mentioned the big end bearings wouldn't cause that, i don't think it would cause the uneven running you would just get the knocking (Although happy to be corrected if i am wrong)

Second that phil, does sound like an intake issue.
I would be very surprised at big ends, the bottom end on the 150pd engine is very strong. They would fail with complete disregard for servcing/maintenance etc.

Findings are camshaft lobe worn on No.3 Cylinder and a couple of worn shells also SFS pipe end lugs worn so loose pipe at intercooler

worn camshaft would increase pressure on the crank therefore cause wear on shells

so its a mini engine rebuild

New
camshaft
Cam Belt
Crank Shells
SFS pipe end connector

and

pro sport bushes kit KIT5133AK

hopefully the car should be like new... for now
