Pretty much the same as everyone above.
Front wheel off and the handlebars at the front of the car.
Although as it's in and out every couple of days the car is getting quite damaged. So I might try it with the back wheel in first.
I managed to make a hole in the roof lining with the forks the other day.

I've never liked bike racks as they can be stolen so easily.

I managed to fit my 19" Frame bike in without removing the front wheel. You do have to be careful getting it in & out though due to the high level of the boot.

I regularly put my mountain bike in the back of my Leon. Both wheels get put in wheel bags and the 2/3rds of the rear seat gets folded down and bike goes in no problem.

I have used a rack on the hatchback of the car, but this has lead to the tailgate being scratched from handlebars and the like and the loss of a rear wiper (bloody automatic rear wiper ).

I have managed to get 2 mountain bikes in the car and 1 on the back with 3 adults inside, but it's a squueze.

I use the back seat with an old rug on it.
I can get my 56 cm road bike on the back seat with the front wheel in the boot or my MTB 18 inch has to go in the boot with back seat down with front wheel off. Cannot get MTB on back seat unless both wheels off.

Better this way as if your driving a long way to a race you can go as fast as you want and with the back seat up its quiter.;)

I used to do a lot of competetive downhill mountain biking events. I would recommend using a rear mounted cycle rack. I have had roof racks in the past and the only plus side is you can get in the boot through the hatch.

I got a rear mounted rack from halfords (£35) so no need to even take off wheels & carries 4 bikes (most 'secure' roof racks require taking the front wheel off to mount.)

I can still access my equipment in the boot through the back seats.

If you don't want to spend a single penny then take off your front wheel. I can fit my biiig Norco Downhill bike in the boot of mine when the front wheel is off. I just don't like doing this as I end up with oil and grease everywhere.

Roof bars are pricey and just don't warrant the extra cost over a boot carier. Also I had an incident on a dual carriage way, when cross winds forced the bike from the roof mounts. Bike ended up being broken up into spares once I collected the pieces!

Good luck with it all.
