Hi Guys,

I know its been a while since I last posted...
The 2.0tdi 140 (2006 on 120,000m) had been running ok but over the last month or so the amount of black smoke that is coming out of the exhaust under acceleration is growing on a daily basis.

The car is run on a daily basis on a 50mile round trip of mainly motorway with a small amount of A road so does get a good run out.

I'm just wondering what i can check and what people of Derv's can think maybe causing this?

Cheers in advance.

Adam :)

This may not be connected... but I have the same car and had the same problem.

I was getting mine remapped and the turbo went (it was dodgy anyway) but what this meant was that i had to drive with basically no turbo. when the turbo wasn't working it was really smoky on acceleration (and it was also like that when i sprung a leak in the turbo intake pipe)

120k miles... how many turbos has it had in that time?

The black smoke could from a dirty burn. Too much fuel and not enough air. Most common cause is not enough air from the turbo (but the correct amount of fuel) because of a turbo boost hose leak.

Funny woosh or hiss noises would be another symptom of the same fault.

^ your game driving with a busted turbo...

I didn't actually KNOW it was busted until I went back, just thought it was a bit sluggish! It was still working anyway, just only at 1x boost rather than... whatever it normally is (I'm winging this conversation :))

I found I was getting air blowing through the vents too when the turbo was kicking in because the engine bay was getting the air blown into it rather than the engine.

new style of aircon? dont think itll catch on tho

Ah the turbo...
It has had one new one and also a reconditioned turbo at around 60,000.
The turbo is making a strange wooshing noise can only be heard when the windows are open so i guess this could be a contributing factor?
Are there any obvios hoses to check that could be damaged or leaking?

Cheers

All the fat ones :p

Mix up some soapy water and apply it with a small paint brush to all of the joins in the boost pipes to and from the intercooler and see if you get any bubbles as you rev it.

Cheers,
Will give that a go later and see what i find...!! :)

Hey, mines on nearly 100k and it got quite smokey so i had the diesel filter changed and its nowhere near as smokey now

For me it was the fat one at the very back of the engine on drivers side... Just so happened the split was pointing in my direction!

Should be able to get someone to do a smoke test on it for not much money to expose any splits
