Morning all,

I hope someone can help me.....

My car keeps blowing a fuse. so far i have found that the fuse runs or has an effect on the following things.

Dash lights.
Speedo
Rev counter
Climate control and display.
Fuel pump.

The story so far.

Girlfriend takes my car to work and calls me up saying no dash lights or speedo - told her to pull in somewhere and turn everything off and restart it..... It wouldn't start....

Went to her rescue in her Clio 172:D Took a look at it.... the car would start but not continue running... when turning the ignition i couldn't hear the fuel pump priming the engine.

Started looking through the fuses and found a 10amp fuse blown (one of the small ones) Luckily we were at a service station. Went to find some fuses and found nothing.

Ended up joining the AA..... The most expensive way to get a fuse! as the missus had taken her car to work.

The fuse from the AA worked all day until I went out this evening - during the day I would have started the car about 4 or 5 times and it worked fine.

Tonight I have gone through 4 or 5 fuses to get the car to run and then have had them blow as I have started the car or they have blown while I have been driving....

The fuse is the third row down. and the third one in from the right (front of the car - Right hand drive)

Does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Why would it blow when starting the car? or work and then fail later? I haven't found a set of circumstances that cause the problem yet. So I haven't a clue where to start.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Id first check that fuse is the right rating, then if it keeps blowing but not straight away (if those are the only components on the fuse) i'd say its the fuel pump. I have had the same on a 9N Polo. The brush gap on the motor got too large and the current required to jump the gap on the brushes was greater than the fuse so it blew.

This would need confirming, I have a spare pump from a vRS if they are the same.

Having had some sleep and done a search.... T. Spark's thread about his FR pointed me in the right direction.

Clicky

Where I had moved stuff to bleed the brakes a week or so before I must have moved the wiring loom a bit.

It has rubbed the insulation tape off the loom and exposed a wire just behind the coolant expansion tank.

Having taped this back up and replaced the fuse - hopefully that will be it - She started 3 times with no problems this evening so hopefully sorted!

Cheers
