Hey Guys

After cleaning the other half's 07 Reg Seat Ibiza today I noticed rust forming from where stone chips had damaged the paint work. I have a Seat Leon FR I was under the impression that VAG had galvanised bodies?

Can anyone shed on light onto this please ?

Thanks

If the stone chip had been powerful enough it would have gone through the galvanising if it is and could start rusting.
Not sure if they are galvanised thought that was Audis?
There are a lot of mk5 golfs , same platform as our Leons so I would doubt if they are galvanised , or maybe in certain areas , like floor pan sill area?

Pretty sure most manufacturers have been galvanised for around the last 10 years.
Even Alfa Romeos were in 1998 aprt from the roof that was! Strange but true.

But as Rob has said if the chip is through the coating it will still rust.

I'm very sure that the body is totally galvanised on all Seats and have been for some years.

Galvanisation is a zinc coating (normally from dipping) of the body, if a stone is sharp it can penetrate the paint and the zinc going through to the steel so rust is indeed possible.

Very easy to penetrate Galv, no match for even a couple of grammes of stone at high speed.

Once even the smallest part is penetrated it can lift allowing moisture underneath.
