Already sorted one buzzing shield which has broken further and now other side rattling, enquired about replacements, on back order I’m told, can I take these off and do without? I know there fitted for a reason but are they essential, just a pain, just another Audi/VW use of crappy metal, no other car of mine has needed these replaced -and some of them were dogs- seems penny pinching is creating problems in many places, the sump is rusting too.

I’ve been wondering the same, got the rears done about a year and a half ago, already rusting.

Acid wheel cleaners can make a real mess of all your brake/suspension components.
I have seen many cars including BMW's/Merc's & Fords with heavy corrosion.

For what it's worth - my brake disc shields are fine on my 2015 Leon.

I only use the ph neutral ones, mainly iron x. I even went as far as coating the shields with a few layers of ceramic based sealant before fitting, in the hope that it would help. It’s only the rears that seem to be the problem. Just assumed it’s all the salt on the roads during winter that’s the problem.

Looks like 288 and 312 discs have the same shields:
If you search for these OE numbers it seems there are many aftermarket versions - some saying Aluminium in the material!
Personally If my shields were heavily corroded I would be looking at fitting new ones - rather than going without.

I fitted new ones to my audi a3 last year

Was a 2013 car. Both went at 70k miles within a month or so of each other.

They give way at the mounting points which leads me to believe it is corrosion between dis-similar metals.

They were about £40 each new. Should be same part on the Seat

They are paper thin and the paint protection is not great. They were rusty again after 12 months

Interesting theory regarding dis-similar metals.
The 288 disc cars usually have an iron knuckle, where as the 312 disc cars usually have an alloy knuckle - so you'd expect more corrosion on the 312 disc cars and cars with an alloy knuckle? Mine has an alloy knuckle and corrosion seems 'reasonable'

Agree they are a thin metal which bends easily. Less un-sprung weight though

Mine was 288mm but they both broke away at circa 70k miles and 8 years of age. Which to me seems premature.

Agree not great.
288mm disc A3's (PR code 1ZE, 1ZP) had a cast iron knuckle -

They are rather thin, just strange how mine isn't too rusty at 104,000 miles.
My old Audi A4 B6 had much stronger shields - I bent one and needed pliers to straighten. When I changed my front wheel bearings I removed my Leon shields and can easily straighten with my fingers!

One rattled today, then stopped, it must have fallen off, no noise=no shield, I’ll probably pick up a pair but treat the mounting points with an extra coat of rust deterrent.
