Driving this morning, and nearly went into back on someone around the corner from work. When I parked up I noticed the pedal was hard and had very little travel.

Turned engine off, and back on and still the same

Are there any common problems?

I assume its the Ibiza TDi you were driving ?

Check the vac hose from the vac pump to the servo - they have been known to split.

Yeah, was the ibiza

i'll check the vac hose when I get home. Do you have a picture?

Will have to drive slowly home

Dont have my MK4 any more so cant take pic.

Have a look under the bonnet - you will see a hose going from the brake servo across the engine to a small pump on the end of the engine.

It usually splits where it joins the connector.

Sometimes there is enough spare hose to just cut the end off and re fit it to the connector.

Perfect, I'll take a look later.

Another vote for a leaking servo vacuum hose. It failed on mine and is a cheap part to replace if is the fault.

There is an auxiliary pump which provides limited additional servo assistance. On my car the auxiliary pump would provide reasonable braking on first push of the brake pedal. However if the pedal was released and immediately reapplied the servo assistance of the auxiliary pump was depleted and there was no servo assistance at all. The pedal felt high and wooden with little braking effect and the car just carried on without stopping. Very scary!

Hi all

I've taken a picture of the engine bay, can someone circle where I need to be looking for the servo pipe

also noticed the engine moves a fair bit on idle, even after a new dogbone mount

Thanks

Unfortunately you can't see it on the photograph. It is a rigid plastic pipe that runs across the bulkhead behind the strut brace. It has a bend forward on the right hand side and has hoses to connect it to the rest of the system.

Ah right

i'll take the strut brace off tonight, and have a proper look

How much is the pipe to replace if need be?

I think the pipe is only a few pounds, although they ran a diagnostic test on mine first to check that that was the problem, so the bill was about £70!

Had a look, as I moves the pipe at the vacuum pump end, I could hear the loss of vacuum.

Managed the pull the end off from the pump nipple fairly easily. The nipple seemed to rotate as well.

Will get a new jubilee clip and see if that sorts out the problem

Even if the new jubilee clip seems to work I would deffo put a new pipe on it for safety.
