Brake Upgrade

Ok guys first of all I already searched a lot on the board, on ETKA and on Brembo catalogue. I've a 1.4 44kw (hope to fit mk2 GTI 1.8 16v in future) and want to upgrade my brakes for street use and maybe some light track session. I would also like to fit ABS from a donor car but still try to see what parts I need to do the conversion. Anyway...
I think my actual brake setup is 239x10mm on floating caliper. Brake distances seems good since the car is very light but I would like to fit at last ventilated discs and don't want to add too much weight to unsprung masses.

This is the list of all mk2 brake setups I've found


239x10 (811 615 301 with 191 615 123 caliper)

I would exclude 280x22 since I still have 14" wheels, so I think my only choice would be 256x20mm (if it will fit) or just 239x20mm.

So
1)Anyone know if 256x20mm will fit 14" wheels with 33mm ET
2) 256mm discs, are the calipers floating or fixed? (if so, how many pistons)
3) 239mm discs, are the calipers floating or fixed? (if so, how many pistons)
4) A part from calipers, pads, discs what else I need to do the conversion?

256mm will fit with 14's, 280mm will fit under 15"s. 239mm are fixed, all the others are floating and have 1 piston.

You need hubs, carriers, calipers, pads and discs
While your at it, change the brake line too

thanks for answer,shouldn't be 239mm floating (1 piston) and bigger ones fixed calipers with 2 or more pistons?

You need hubs, carriers, calipers, pads and discs
While your at it, change the brake line too

thanks for answer,damn that's a lot of stuff, can I take hubs and calipers from a car with ABS even if mine haven't it (yet)?

I would suggest you just rip all the donor parts off a MK2 Golf GTI 16V. It should all fit up fine inc hubs, carriers etc and they are 256mm Vented up front on ones after 1987.

Its not that many parts, as most people will sell them as a set anyway

Yeah you can put ABS ones on, but it won't work (obviously) but when you set it up it will

I had 239 x 20mm vented on my 1.4 as standard for some reason. Now I have 280 x 22 16v brakes on.

Had to change hubs, callipers, carriers, discs and pads. And while I was at it I put 2 new wheel bearings on.

Cruiser did you ever tried 14" wheels with 239mm? Let me know if you want to get rid off the old hubs, calipers and carriers ;D

I had 13" steel wheels on with the 239m brakes.
