I managed to break my windscreen wiper controller a f're years back and although I can still use the wiper its difficult and want to get it fixed.I've been told that I need to replace the complete centre console.can anybody tell me if this is correct and how much it may cost.My Ibiza is a 2004 1.4 model.many thanks in advance

You'll need a new set of stalks and as you've already mentioned, they come as one complete unit.
Easy to replace, all you need to do is remove the steering wheel and airbag and unscrew the old stalks and replace.
New stalks are about £60-£70 new or £20 used and it will depend on what you have fitted now.
They're are 4 different types:
6Q0953513D - steering col. combi switch
6Q0953513E - steering col. combi switch; for vehicles with multi function computer
6Q0953513F - steering col. combi switch; for models with cruise control system
6Q0953513G - steering col. combi switch; for vehicles with cruise control system and multi function computer

The part numbers vary at the end as they are different revisions and versions. If it looks similar, or come of the same car, it'll fit
