Hi folks, Currently have a mk2 Ibiza GTi 2.0 8v. She's been a great car and very reliable. Have modded her a little but nothing fast & furious and she has been quite easy to work on and have enjoy'd ownership of the ibiza.

Time has come to upgrade and I want a Mk3. Now my understanding is the chassis and running gear is almost the same as the Mk2 as is the interior.

I've started looking around for a Mk3 Cupra. I think the R is slightly out of my budget but the Cupra looks tasty to me.

I would like some advise on the turbo engine + box really. I assume its VW and is generlly reliable as long as the belts are changed at 60k (?) and regualry serviced. I know nothing about turbos though. I have read through the discussions about the dump valve and understand that this engine does not appreciate the DV. I'm not into tuneing really and want a reliable comfotable sporty car, like my Mk2 but newer. I had a bad expeirience with a mates RS Turbo throwing a rod through the block whilst on full boost. It was awesome but it went woooosh, bang, smoke. This is why i ask

Same with the gearbox really. I had to replace the 020 gearbox on my 8v as the 2nd gear crunched whilst changing at anything over 2 1/2 revs. Does the Mk3 have a better/stronger box than the 02 type. I was told the sync failling was a commen problem.

Just to be a pain, last question really.

I want to know about the sound system. From searching I found it is possible to add an amp and sub to the standard headunit. What is the standard units output? Is it possible to install a seperate headunit if the standard one is rubbish (is it rubbish?) Did all Cupras come with a tape deck? and were all of them fitted with the changer in the boot? Are the speakers adequate. I like my sounds loud. Oh and are the parcel shelves the same Mk2 to Mk3?

Cheers folks

1. You will love the mk3 (you say your not into tuning...niether was i but look at my sig! lol )
2. Buy one!
3. Think the gear box is an 02J (dont know if thats the same as mk2)
4. Main things that are prone to go is the MAF and coilpacks but this is normally after been modded.
5. Dump valves- these 1.8T engines dont like atmospheric ones-they use recerculated but we can use the forge split r and the turbosmart which act as both.
6.Sound system...headunit is 20watt rms per channel- i found the speakers to be crap so upgraded them, headunit powers them nicely and does go quite loud with also a amp and sub install-sound schweet, tape deck is standard and they do come with a 6disc changer in the boot (am sure some people have bought a cupra and didnt have 1 tho-just the cable there ready) few people have upgraded the standard hu for a proper cd headunit (pioneer/alpine ect)

Yup also wondered about the sound system if it was possible to fit a proper HU.

yep - hooch and a few others have done it - some have removed the centre air vents and put it in there - under the steering wheel -

the best one i remember seeing was the face of the head unit was installed in the head lining near the interior light although not sure where the the rest was installed -
