Cambelt Change!

Is the cambelt change done at 60,000 miles or at 4 years if that hits before the 60,000 miles - does it need doing then?

My cars 5 years old and done 50k miles - should i get it done?

Mine is due it, its after 4 years due to shelf life of belt apparently.

i thought cambelt on the beezer was 40,000 as thats the main big 1st service! but evry manufacture is diffrent! look in your service book it will tell you what is due and at which service

make sure they put yours on properly i got mine done a few months ago with a water pump and they put it on a tooth out!!!!! caused BIG problems!

Any idea what the engine code is for an '02 1.9TDI PD130 - im trying to spot it in the engine bay but no luck :S - ill have to buy the cambelt kit off ebay and ill get it done somewhere in Nottingham.

*** just been quoted £390 from a Seat Dealership. I told them where to go.

I called Nationwide Autocentres, got a quote of £200 or 220 all in!

Thats cheap considering the price of the parts are close to £100 or more

I've just recently had mine done. I went the whole hog with belt, tensioners, water pump, major service, new discs and pads and an MOT so by looking at how much i paid for all that the quote seems not too bad for a dealer. I went to Bedrock Veedubs though...they seemed to have WAY more experience with the PD130 lump than Seat with all the VWs they do, not to mention cheaper. I would advise checking out a local VW specialist before anywhere else...

seat quoted you £300 with the exsperiences *** had with seat doing my cambelt i wouldnt give them a 5er! put my cambelt on a tooth out caused big problems!

Interesting that people say "60k... or 4 years".

Only mention it because mines just turned 4 years old (though only 26k on the clock) and got the last service done at an independent, so they went by what the service book says. And I've had a close look at the service book and it just says "60k for all TDI engined cars". IE... no mention of "or four years if earlier". So it's not been changed! To be honest, 4 years does not sound like a particularly long "shelf life".

Emm... now I wonder if this means I should get it changed!?

i would considering what they cost compared to not changing it

if you had a tyre sat in the shed that had done 20 miles but had been there 5 years would you trust it ?

You make a good point.

You would think though that they would state in the Service Book the age limit as well as the millage.

Just to show my ignorance... But is this a job that pretty much any competent garage could tackle? It's just that my nearest SEAT dealer is now a 200 mile round trip! The last service was done by my local Ford garage, as they service our other car and have always been very good (I told them to follow the service book and to use VW approved parts). I don't have a lot of choice garage wise living round here (IE. back of beyond). Though I think there is a Skoda dealer in Dumfries.

O'well... decided to bite the bullet and book it in to get it done.

Not much choice round here (IE. can't play one off another) . Had long chat with techie at local Nationwide Auto Centre and he appeared to know his stuff. So it's booked in next Thursday to get the full cambelt kit and a new water pump (metal impeller) fitted. Though at £360 all in, it aint the cheapest! One of the downsides to living in a remote area.

Not bad price, but you could buy the parts for approx £100 ish and then pay an independant 3 hrs labour - so approx £250

how easy is it to change the cambelt yourself?

i've changed cambelts on cars before, but during the 3 months i've had my PD130 sport, whilst looking around the engine bay i've yet to work out how to get at it!

is there a thread i have yet to come across whilst searching, that details a cambelt change?

Got a local skoda dealer?? My skoda place ae doing mine along with full service and water pump etc etc
