The cambelt doesn't need doing until Sept 09, so I may just negotiate the price instead. Thats IF we sell. In two minds....

Nice car, but its boring. But its cheap to own, but its boring.... sort of goes like that. LOL

Not difficult to understand what i wrote.

The point is he made a mistake, so just tell him, without the nonsense of 'youve got a lot to learn' there is simply no need for it.

quite right mate.... alot to learn... itis impossible to learn everythin about engines.

If it's got 9 months left then I wouldn't bother getting it done, as others have said. That's if you can shift it before September of course ;)

Re selling car

If youre selling I wouldnt bother with the cambelt if its going to cost a few hundred. Just be honest with the buyer and say its a good idea to get that done.

:) Yup i agree. However,if i was trading it in,rather than a private sale my morals would fly out the window.Buyer beware!.
I knew a guy once, sold his Micra(with no MOT) to a guy who thought he knew about motors.Turned out it needed some serious work done on it.Him and his misses were accosted by this guy and his mates out on a Saturday night demanding his money back. Then he showed up at his door.Gave him his money back.Better that than getting your windows put in(at least).

Id never buy without an MOT, unless stupidly cheap, and coming with a free naked massage from Drew Barrymore. Hasnt happened yet :-(

I love it when people state 'easy jobs to get through MOT', if its so easy then get it done.

 Yeah.No such thing as a free lunch!.

I understand with newish cars that a good stamp is necessary, particularly with items like a cambelt.

Might however be worth finding a non-dealer garage with a good name and getting a quote? ie is it national or nationwide autocentres?

Plus its annoying that cambelt intervals seem a lot lower now than they used to be, another way of making money out of people needlessly!

I always change the belts at four years (if mileage not reached first). Why? Experiance, this was a bet I removed a few months back, 25k on the clock, 4 years old.

And personally I would think spending a few hundred quid on a cambelt prior to selling the car would make it sell alot easier.

Seat interval used to be 6 years or 60,000 miles according to JBS but they shortened the period to 4 years or 60,000.

Just had mine done at 5.5 years and 60,000 and feel much better for having it done.

I know what it feels like when cambelt jumped on my 106GTi. 16 bent valves :cry::cry: Kept a couple for posterity!

Well worth getting done. If you're thinking about getting it done, then you probably should.

Techie, are you Lummox on the Briskoda forum?

If so, I just had my Cambelt changed the other week on my Cupra TDI by a dealer. They did not replace the waterpump.

I remembered you mentioned on Briskoda that there is no need to replace the waterpump on TDIs because their failure rate isn't as bad as 1.8T Petrol.

Yet some people on here are getting them changed. Why is this?
