Hi, my 2001 1.6 16v cambelt snapped doing 50 mph on Saturday night, I was just wondering what kind of damage that is likely to have been done, I attempted to start it a lot of times since and not until I was towed home that I took the cover off to see the belt sheered in half, I'm also wondering if it was actually changed when I paid to have it done 2 years ago, it's a Goodyear belt and looks the same as the belt beside it, is their anyway of knowing/estimating the age of a belt? The cars only worth about 600 quid do not worth spending any substantial money on it.

Valves, cams and new belt and tensioner I'd expect.

eBay with a dead engine, it'll cost you more than its worth and more than you can buy a replacement for

Would selling it on eBay get me more money than the average scrap value?

Sorry to hear this mate.

Does seem odd that it will have snapped in only 2 years - only half the recommended intervals.

You could take the head off to assess the damage. But if the car is only worth 600 it might not be worth it, unless you can do the work yourself....

yeh its ****ed lol

Very much so, it will be going up on ebay tomorrow, now i need a newer car for 4k and a tdi preferably, later leons are too pricey and want at least a reference sport. Been semi interested in a grandad jaguar xj 2.0td go for about 3.5k for 80k miles 60 mpg on a run etc.

cheers for the offer mate, ive sent my loan forms off to get a diff car now, so might as well just get rid of this 1, it has the usual leon traits of water in the footwells and other problems, so i dont want to waste mine or anyone elses time!

sold it on ebay for £480, well happy with that price considering!

cheers people!

looking at going to a derv, probably a golf gt tdi 140, I dont do silly amounts of miles just the leon was averaging 37mpg regardless of how i drove it and that was only a 1.6, I got my eye on an 05 plate 5 door with fsh but high miles 110k but fvwsh and 99% motorway cruising for just over £4k. Ive heard stories of porous heads but think they got a bit better on the 05 and ill make sure i have a can of k-seal in case, Their are maybe slightly better models at £5k but saving the grand will help if I get any issues with it.
