Camshaft adjustment recall

Had my car in today at the dealers to have my rear lights replaced under warranty and they asked me to rebook the car in with them to have the camshaft adjuster replaced under recall.

That sounds like expensive work to me! This is the first I've heard of tensioner problems on an ea211 engine. Anyone else have any experience of this? My car has the 1.2TSI and I've had no engine issues whatsoever. I don't mind having it done, I was just surprised to hear of a recall of this nature on these engines!

The EA211 is rare in that it never needs a cambelt change - which will save a load of money. I guess they are just being careful to make sure it lives up to those claims.

Just an update for anyone else who may have been asked to take theirs in for this recall work.

The recall relates to a small part hidden in the guts of the engine and it turns out that changing it is a big job. They had the master tech working on my car and it still took them a couple of days to get it right.

However, now that it is done the car feels completely different. I didn't think there was anything wrong with mine, but now I have it back it feels faster, more responsive and is much quieter. There's no more diesel style clatter on start up like there used to be.

If you've been asked to book yours in, do it sooner rather than later. Apparently the recall was issued due to failures of the part in question being reported across the whole VAG group 1.2TSI. Mine apparently was just sticky, but if it had failed completely it would have sent the timing out on the camshaft and subsequently have needed a new engine. So not one of those recalls you should wait until servicing work to book it in for. It doesn't affect all 1.2TSI's just those produced around a certain time. Mine is a June 2014 DSG.
