Angry Crankshaft sensor?
Hi guys,

Had some trouble with the moter recently, stuttering when starting, and just doesn't feel right.

Hooked it into VAG COM and got this:

VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.0

3 Faults Found:
17936 - Camshaft Timing Adj. Bank1 (N205): Open Circuit
P1528 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
16396 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): Advance Setpoint not Reached (Over-Retarded)
16500 - Engine Coolant Temp. Sensor (G62): Implausible Signal
Readiness: 0000 0000

Where is the camshaft sensor? I think its the N205.

Open circuit im assuming its gubbed, but read on a Golf forum that the outside temperature can affect the tension of the cambelt, and throw up this fault.

Any ideas welcxome cos I'm stumped!

Where about?

look at the engine from the side the coolant res is on, so the cam cover is square infront of you, look down at the top right corner (nearest the front) and just underneath you will see you engine code plate, and an electrical connection going underneath your cam cover, that connection plugs to the cam position sensor :D

those faults both refer to the timing, not the sensor and the N205 is the vvt unit on the gearbox side of the head.

The cam sensor is G40 and the crank sensor is G28.

If you have doubts about the temp sensor them change that first, a new genuine part can be bought for less than 20sheets from a dealer or tps outlet.

Open circuit means as it sounds - the circuit is open, it could be unplugged or have a bad connection, remove the plug amd clean it, check all the fuses also and have a look around the wiring for any breaks.

If all appears ok then erase the fault and re-scan is next week. timing advancement or retardment faults on the 20vt normally indicate that the oil feed pick-up is becoming blocked.

Cheers guys, had a look seemed to relate to the N205 valve for some reason, had a look and found it was leaking, one of the retaining screws had came loose.

Took it for a run, seems a lot better. Will re- scan at a later date and see what happens.

If i did an engine flush would that clear the oil pick up pipe out?

nope, you have to remove the sump to clean the pick up, its like a funnel, narrow at the point of oil contact and gets wider at the top then goes into a pipe, so the crap gets stuck up in the wider part and has to be scraped out, not a hard job, i changed the sump on mine and im thinkinf of cleaning the pick up out again as the top ends getting a little tappy again

could be the vvt unit, incorrect timing on the chain end or the oil galleries have become blocked by sealer.

Timing been checked by engine rebuilder so know that's correct, and are the vvt units easy enough to change,
It's a variable fault so maybe the solernoid sticking? Can these be changed separately?
I thought injectors as there 440 and also have 4bar fpr fitted so, every garage been to just guessing, would this fault cause a loss of power?

did they remove the cam cover and count the number of chain links between the 2 cams? not just the cam to crankshaft timing.

yeah they have had it back twice and they done the whole rebuild,

its intermittent its a basically new engine, are these easy to change and do you need to split the chain,

anymore ideas or know or any weak points on wiring,

and what would this error do,

would it make engine be down on power and is there a way to check oil pressure with vagcom or anything?

yeah the two links distance between the cam sprockets.

the vvt unit wont be atering the timing at the correct times so power would be down.

checking oil pressure needs to be done with an analogue gauge

they cam be replaced in situ using the chain depressing tool and they chain does not need touching.
