Circlip pliers! that's what normally used. The circlips are quite tricky to take off and put back on. It could be that one circlip was damaged when the garage removed it and it wasn't put back properly. This would cause the shaft to slip out of the cv.

6Q0498103A constant velocity joint with boot, attachment parts and grease inner / AZQ,BBY,AUB, ASY,BBZ
the E in front you listed is from the stock control on a kerridge parts system so the numbers right
the X at the end means Exchange Unit which means you return the old unit for rebuild at VAG and they supply a unit back (rebuilt)
an outright new part would be more than double that price
so it hasnt been replaced it has been refurbished at a lower price
2 weeks to fix a drive shaft fault its a 10 minuite job and an half an hour MAXIMUM on diagnosing the problem
