Can Tyre Profiles Be Different???

Just a quick question...

Is it safe to have different lower tyre profile on back tyres compared to front tyres?

Why would you want to do that to avoid scrubbing or something? Interesting tho as I guess the mileage etc is recorded from the front wheels. Probly make them wear down a bit quicker as more revolutions etc.

i ran my old vrs with different tyres front to back.It was fine,obviously,you might be different.
what sizes are you considering?

Well i've had to downsize from 17's to 15's! I know, I know, i feel like i've lost my man hood! But had to do it because of cost of tyres for my 17's and was gettin loads of punctures.

So anyway, got 15s fitted and they came with new tyres all 195 / 60 / 15 and they're rubbing on the back wheels, but not on the front. So just really want to replace back ones if that's possible???

prob not the best idea no, will make the car handle diferent not to mention may (not positive) knock your speedo out slightly. but will definitly make the handling weird

i was running 205/50/17 rears and 225/45/17 fronts,i think the difference in rolling radius was something like .05%.
So do your homework before you decide.

running the same tyres all round too (GSD3)

how much of a difference you looking to have? 60 profile on front? 55? 50? 45? etc on back. If only like 55 id just do it until you need to replace the fronts. then get same profile as rear.

When i was gettin my wheels done on my old car i ran on different steelies. Dif profile, Was only slighlty out so didnt make much diference but try it see how it feels. may have to change them.

You can do it yes. Obviously not on the same axle but front to back is no problem.

Well I'd like to keep fronts at profile of 60 and rears down to 50 not sure if this is too much of a difference, but I definitly need 50s on the rear...

...although I may just replace all four down to 50 or 45, and keep the 60's as spares??

But... i heard a rumour that garages now don't let you keep your old tyres? is this true????????????

Garages let you keep your tyres if you ask them. Will save you some cash also as they charge to get rid of them.

I would change them all to 45s. 60s will be HUGE! :O

Maybe if you didn't go on so many beaches you wouldn't get punctures..! Had to throw that one in there!

No you cant as the tcs will come on all the time as it thinks the front wheels are going faster than the back thus presuming wheel spin and cuting power ( i had this when i replaced my front tyres with a lower profile set ).

my next question is TCS on a 1.4 ibiza? and does TCS on \ fwd car sense the rear wheels?
and on my old vrs i never had this problem either(it had TCS)

Yeh think it might have been something else there maybe... Can't see how it would work that out. Plus a 1.4 doesn't have TCS

I've run different profiles f/r without any problems, but that is down to the width of tyre rather than specifically running different profiles.

Now I run 215's all round rather than 205/215 f/r split and the difference is un-noticeable.

Went to garage...

Right, finally got round to going to the garage to get new tyres put on... but first they refused to fit different profiles front and back, so fair enough, I agreed and then asked for all four changing but wanted the 195 / 60 / 15 tyres replaced with 195 / 50 / 15... But they refused to do this!!

They said there wouldn't be enough room in the arches still!! Now I've had 17" alloys on before with 205/45/17 and they were fine, no rubbing or anything, now surely 195/50/15 should be fine!!!!

But they've suggest I go to 195/45/15... but then I'm back into the same price range of my old 17" tyres, and the whole reason of going back to 15"s was so I could save a bit of money by getting £30 tyres once again!!!!

What should I do???

Well I went through tyreshopper.co.uk and so the fitting the centre was at national tyres or whatever they're called. Problem with round my area when I'm at uni in Bangor all the local small garages are really 'racist' to anyone who isn't welsh or doesn't speak welsh, so they charge stupid amount to do anything!
