I went to turn my car on yesterday after a round of golf and the car would do the needle swipe on the speedo and then turn off instantly. Happened a while ago but had no problems since then and that was over 6 months ago. Bit worried it happened again yesterday. Could it possibly be the battery? After leaving it for a couple of minutes I was able to start it fortunately

I am gonna guess that on both occasions you never got as far as turning the key to crank the engine? As in... ignition on, needle sweep, then everything off, as if you'd parked up and taken the key out?

If so then it's more likely to be an ignition switch /connection issue than a battery thing.

Normally a duff battery will result in fading/failing instrument lights as you turn the key to start the engine, followed by/accompanied with one, or all of: a click, lots of clicks, a slow sluggish noise as the starter motor turns very slowly, and then nothing.

That said, worth checking the battery connections, just on the off chance that one of them is loose.

***EDIT***
Aardvark mentions a column switch issue for 2014 models here: http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=429898 ...could be..? :)

Thanks for the reply. Definitely switched the ignition the whole way. Tried it a few times. It's strange as it's been fine since and has happened twice after I've played golf. Maybe a coincidence. Touch wood it won't happen again but if it does I'll ring the dealer.

And it's my16 so shouldn't be column issue

Maybe it's trying to tell you not to play golf :)

Only other thing that's just this second come to mind is the car key itself. It's a very 'immobiliser-ish' sounding problem, and as the transponder is in the key, perhaps it is that which is periodically being the culprit. Not easy to test, obviously - other than taking both car keys with you next time you hit the course.

If it has only happened at the same location is it possible there might be some sort of electronic equipment nearby that is interfering with the car?

Or you might be like me today, the car wouldn't start because I hadn't pushed the clutch pedal far enough down? Was pretty sure I hadn't done anything different to normal but there was still some travel in the pedal

I'll take both keys and see if that fan prove it. And I made sure clutch was all the way down so don't think it was that. I did notice there was a ticking sound under the bonnet when it wasn't starting. As soon as this ticking stopped I tried it again and that's when it worked
