Just wondered, where do you guys get all your parts from?

I might need some new brake pads but want to avoid SEAT. I'm looking for standard or uprated brakes, depends how much uprated brakes are. I'm more interested in where you get all parts from though...

Another question - If my car hasn't got ABS, will fitting uprated brakes just make my wheels lock up when breaking hard? Also, should i just uprate the pads, or do you recommend uprating the discs, and, is there any point/ is it possible to uprate the calipers?

P.S Did you watch the England game? What was McClaren thinking playing Scott Carson? He made a good save but he isn't ready for such an important game yet. Anyone think McClaren will stay? :p. Mariano for manager. Lol.

Hi,

In any car, under heavy braking, the brakes will always cause the tyres to lock. If you uprate the brakes to generate more force then yes they are more likely to lock up.

Uprated discs normally take the form of slotted, drilled or slotted & drilled. This helps dissipate heat when braking heavily (i.e reducing brake fade).

If you want bigger discs, you need bigger calipers too. I don't know what setup you've got already but the 280mm (16v) conversion is meant to be bolt on.

Edited to add: I'd be amazed if the gaffa keeps his job!

Thanks for the info guys. It's helped a lot.

What would you guys do if you didn't have ABS? Would you just fit standard pads or uprate them?

Do you brake heavily enough to suffer brake fade?

Also, standard parts are fairly cheap.... a set of uprated pads and discs will cost a fair bit more.

I've never had brake fade, but i've recently had a crash because my brakes locked up after about a second of hard breaking. The car infront of me stopped in time, well i say "in time" but she performed an emergency stop when she just needed to dab the brakes or just let off the throttle, but i went into the back of her :)hide:) so was looking for better stopping power...

Oops

If your brakes locked up then I'd say they're working just fine!

I'd start out by buying some sticky tyres. There's a thread on Pistonheads about winter tyres which might make interesting reading.

Thanks. I'll check that out. I was gonna look into better tyres coz i think that's the main reason why my brakes locked up...

No point in starting a new thread as this one is focused on brakes at the minute...

Anyway, i'm going to replace my brake pads, but do you think the discs will need replacing aswell? Do you replace the discs every time you replace the pads? (Never personally changed brakes before.)

Also, my car has rear drum brakes. At the expense of sounding dumb, can i change these to discs and pads? If so what work will need doing?

Thanks.

I have fitted brembo's to mine and thinking of seeing if I can remove my abs to be honest! Mind you it haven't worked for a while, plus my mate's old man runs a brake company and he recommended taking the abs fuse out or something.

Oh and about the england game.... I'm welsh so you know I'm gonna be happy :)

Your old man's mate is more stupid than you can ever imagine.

You would have no brake bias, very very dangerous.

Replumb & remove the whole system, with some method of bias, whether load based or manual.

or just leave it, as I think you will find that it's useful.

Why do you want to remove the ABS?

P.S. Anyone have any thoughts on my above post? (Can i replace the rear drum brakes with discs and pads?, And also, should i replace the front discs aswell as the pads? How long, roughly, do discs last?) Thanks.

Well with brembo's (or with any bigger brakes than standard) you can brake a lot hard and later and when the abs kicks in it's the last thing you want I find. ABS don't help you stop any quicker just helps you control the car more under hard braking! Which means sometimes increasing your stopping distance!
