Nope, I think it is one of those urban myths. As FR Matt said, the drift is in the other direction when you drive the same car abroad, so - assuming the car is set up properly - its the road camber which causes the drift.
Like the Romans, we put camber on a road for drainage; steering drift is an incidental effect.
