Car stolen/recovered before purchase!

So last night coming home, might of been bending the speed limit a little, blue lights stopped me, fair enough, first time in 5years(not bad if I say so myself :)) He was fine with it, no points, roads were empty ect but did the usual checks name address points. Over the walkie talkie a gentleman said car was stolen/recovered. I was like whoa whoa whoa, when?

"28th April '11" Was registered in March '11 and I bought it end of August '11. Only had 900 miles on it when purchased lol!

So, my predicament is, shouldnt they have told me this? The salesman said it was HPI clear. Then a few months on(you might have seen) I found out 3 of my alloys were kerbed before purchase and touched up, I asked how that happend, they said would of just been the dealer who was driving it not being bothered about parking.

If its on the PNC, shouldnt it come up on a HPI check and will/wont this effect the resale value of the car? I mean the cars fine but it would still put a black cloud over it.

More importantly the dealer(that by all accoutns have been great and very nice to deal with) has lied twice about it. Wonder what recourse I can take?

Will be sending them a well worded email and phone call at somepoint soon.

Any input or advice would be greatful :)

Thanks

Do you have the HPI official paperwork stating that it was hpi clear at the time ? - if yes then go after HPI.

If it is just the dealers paperwork that states HPI clear then DEMAND that they have the car inspected at their cost and removed from the register ( yes it can be done )
THEN start talking compensation.

No the dealer assured me it was HPI Clear and being 4months old with 900miles You'd kinda guess it was. I might have a HPI cert i'll have a flick through my documents/invoice for car.

Will get them to do that and remove it from the register. They shuold of done that almost 2 years ago!

HPI will be quick to clear if it's a mistake. I was selling the car I was driving and HPI said it had been scrapped whilst I owned it, which was rubbish and they corrected it straight away.

can you not just get a new hpi done see if it comes up and compare it to one if you have one in your doccuments if they dont match up then go back to seat and show them the certificates proving what it says and see what they say as normally if car is stolen recovered it is worth less than a car that isnt same with cat c and d they worth less aswell...

Yeah but if the PNC yesterday night said it was, Im pretty confident it will be!

Yeha thats what im getting at, if it is Stolen/Recovered it will be worth less.

go to seat say you was pulled over yesterday for a routine check point and they said it was stolen recovered and you want them to pay for another hpi check to check it as was never told when purchased the car and if it is you want compensation

I'd definitely look into it.

Stolen/recovered on the HPI would definitely lower the value, just think yourself, would you go ahead and buy a stolen/recovered car full price?! :p

I'm not 100% sure - dont quote me but, I think that the HPi is an insurance document, therefore if its not on there as stolen and it had been then you will be able to claim.

I do think that when it was stolen it would flag up on the HPI but maybe when it was recovered, no insurance would pay out is it wouldnt be 'categorised' and with it being recovered its no longer stolen so the mark will get removed.

So it may not show up.

The best bet is to go to the dealers and get them to sort it, failing that SEAT UK will.

The only way it would show on hpi is if it went through the insurance but 9 times out of ten the car is returned to the owner so doesn't affect insurance/hpi

The car will flag up on the police computer as it has been reported stolen and then they have recovered it.

Police database and hpi are not linked

Think the dealer maybe not telling you something like a customer took it for a test drive and stole it. Dealer reports to police , police fund and recover the car

The dealer was never going to tell you this. If they don't admit to it then I would ring the police and see what information you can get from them and take it from there

Thanks for the replies.

Ive fired an email off to the dealer in question asking why on three occasions I was lied to about the car. Ive asked for a copy of a fresh HPI check. That S/R cars even with no damage are cheaper to buy and harder to sell on. I've also asked for the circumstances of the theft/report and what damage was done as well as how long it was missing for.

Will see what they reply with.

I am happy with the car and its a great drive but thats not exactly the point.

Think itll only be on the hpi report if when it was stolen it was claimed on....? If there was no claim then itll be hpi clear.

That is interesting as I had always assumed HPI gave you the whole history about the car. Below is an extract from HPI's website.

"What type of information does an HPI Check NOT provide?
Your HPI Check does not provide the names of or information pertaining to a vehicle's previous or current owner(s).

Your HPI Check will not provide information on every accident a vehicle has been in. Accident damage is only identified where an insurance company has registered the vehicle as a write-off.

Your HPI Check will not provide any details on the service history of a vehicle. Your HPI Check will not assess the mechanical condition of a vehicle. If you would like to have an independent inspection of a vehicle, you will need to contact organisations such as the RAC and book a Vehicle Examination.

Your HPI Check will not provide any details if the vehicle has been stolen and recovered unless there are outstanding interests or the vehicle was subject to being written off as a total loss by the insurer."

Based on the comment above I wouldn't be too concerned about the future value of your car Jay, as it sounds to me like a prospective buyer has no way of checking. It would only show up if it is currently listed as stolen.

How did you get that info and is it free?

I would love to check a friends car but don't want to pay.

I think lied to is a bit strong. I know you're angry, but they told you it was HPI clear and it is.

They'll probably just delete your email, which is ok cos you don't need the HPI check now anyway, but in future you're probably better going in and talking to someone - they'll be more inclined to help.

Just my two-penneth. No offence intended.
