Right, another problem :(

I'm getting a loud rattling noise from under the car at lowish revs, took it to the garage and they've diagnosed that its the Catalytic Converter....

I've been quoted £70 for a new part and then £60 for labour, does this sound about right?

I'm also thinking this is a good excuse to get myself a used exhaust system, such as the Mk3 Cupra system ;)......Is this system a straight swap? I know that the back box is pretty much the same fitment...

Thanks :)

Cant help you with the labour regarding the cat because I dont know how big a job or that it is.

The Mk3 Cupra System goes straight on. If you have the centre section aswell you will just need a reducer for that the cat-end. Everything else fits. Although the 2 rear mounts may need changed for ones turned 90 degrees.

!!!

hi bud i had the same problem but that was a pretty gd quote bud as i got quoted 116 for the part and 50 for fitting but a friend of mine had a garage and he took out the parts rattling and left it as an empty box for the mean while so it didnt make the rattling cus it happen just after the mot so got 12 months to find a cheaper part haha !!! hope it helps !!

cheap enough that Arun, mind you seen a few emptied out before now and at least 2 golf ones with a big screw rammed in em to keep em quiet for a while too

arun that sounds ok, but have a look on this

i don't know your engine size etc. might be cheaper mate!

Thanks for the link, i've had a look, and theres 2, one for £46, the other is £58,
unsure which ones right because im not sure if my cars early or late 96.....
I think ill just get the mechanic to get it done, ill get him to cut a bit off the labour ;)

Sure it's not the downpipe heatshield?
I've been told that its definitely the cat converter....and the sound does come from directly underneath the car, not the engine bay

Thanks for the replies everyone and happy 2010! :D

there's a heatshield on the cat itself - mine rattled at low revs, kwikfit told me i needed a new cat etc, i got under the car & found it was just the heatshield. pulled it off, problem solved. i'd check it if i were you, see if you can hold it in place with a long stick while you rev it?
