I need to buy some new tyres for my fr,now i know how important tyre choice is but after looking on mytyres.co.uk a seed of doubt has been planted, why should i pay £120 for a premium brand when i can get a budget brand from £60.All the tyres have been tested by tyretest.com and some of the budget brands out perform premium brands in every department. So the question is should i go cheap ?

Definately not!

Cheap tyres are not worth the money i put cheap tyres on my ibiza had them for 3 months then too them back off again and flogged them for Eagle F1's Night and Day the difference.

Tyres are your only contact with the road. They're the ONE part of the car you do NOT want to scrimp on.

If you want to end up in a ditch, fine, go with cheap tyres.

I know what you mean because I went to the local tyre place who I trust and they had some kumho tyres that looked OK. But because I didn't know what they were I wasn't interrested.

I think they problem is the unknown, if you had them before and knew what they were like then your opinion may be different. It's like DanGB said in my thread, it's all personal choice.

By they way think I'm going for the Goodyears! (Snob!) ;)

You might be lucky and get a good tyre, but you might be unlucky and get a bad one. At least when you stick with what others use and rave about, you are almost guaranteed to be happy, if a little out of pocket.

I have certainly had good "cheap" tyres in the past, but I have equally had crap "cheap" tyres too.

Personally, I buy branded tyres, and have gone on other peoples recommendations in the past, but now prefer to judge for myself and I try various brands.

For what its worth I have had a few seats of Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's and the latter ones were not as good as the first ones. The Pirelli P-Zero Rossos that come on the Cupra are good tyres but they were ruled out for lack of side wall protection. I recently added Bridgestone Potenza RE-040's to the front of my Cupra and so far they seem ok - a little hard perhaps which is meaning increased wheelspin, but hopefully they will outlast the 10,000 miles the OEM tyres managed.

as i stated i know how important tyres are but my argument is if a tyre has been independentaly tested and outperforms my prefered brand in every department then whats the problem, by the way i was looking at bridgestones only to keep all tyres the same.

Depends on the brand, which one are you looking at?

I've had some good deals on less well known tyres in the past. On the Celica I ran japanese tyres which were excellent but a lot cheaper than well know European brands (I used Yokohamas and Toyo's). On the Focus 1.8 I had I ran some Avons which were really good but my mates took the mick out of me for buying a cheap make tyre...

Also many manufacturers have a budget brand, which is basically just an old design tread pattern but built to the same standard as their leading brand tyres.

As the others say though, tyres and brakes are the two things you should never skimp on.

Bridgestone is classed as budget make nowadays but is still a good brand. Just not a household name like some of the others.

At the end of the day if manufacturers fit them to cars as standard they can't be that bad.

A Michelin on the other hand will normally give you the best wear rate, but you pay a premium for them and overall performance may not be as good.

Sometimes you are just paying for the name for things, but then they got the name for a reason.I would think companies such as pirelli, michelin and goodyear spend alot more on reseach and development on new tyre design and therefore have a higher retail price to reflect this fact.
Big tyre companies do offer budget designs,i think kleber is owned by michelin for example. Are they any better than the michelin pilot sport,i doubt it but then they probably cost alot less.

Does anyone have Good Year Eagle F1 GSD3s fitted to an FR TDI/FR/Cupra?

My tdi came with Michelin Pilot Exaltos on, which seem to be wearing quite well (i.e. not too quickly) but their performance in the wet is meant to be pretty bad (I never really had a problem with them) 15k miles in and they're still going strong and well legal.

Would I regret putting F1s on ?

i've just put some eagle f1 gsd3 on my fr tdi/ they are at the back but immediatley the car feels better planted at the back. will be changing my fronts in around 2-3k miles soon and they will also be for eagle f1s - great tyres in my book!

I use Goodyear Eagle F1s on my Focus RS, and tbh I WILL be putting a set on the FR when I have too, by far the best tyre I have ever used.... exp Michlen Pilot Sport 1`s, which are expensive and very hard to get now!

I used Goodyear Eagle F1s on my Mk 1 Leon Cupra. 5 or 6 pairs if I remember right. I felt the difference right away. I'll definitely be going for their replacement when I need new tyres, but there's a lot of tread on the tyres which came on my new Cupra.

I bought the cheapest tyres I could find for my old astra £34, absolutely terrible.

I never felt confident in heavy rain or standing water. I solved the problem by getting rid of the car
