Hi,
I need some advice about my ibiza tdi...... I have been getting a knocking noise for a while but only when i fully turned the wheel , it got more freequent in past week so i took it to a garage, first they said it was my c v joint , it didnt make it better , then they said it was my driveshaft.... they replaced it , and got a refund on c v joint.... anyway i picked it up today and the clunking is still there!!!
I will call them tomorrow to tell them I am not happy as I still got the clunking on the way home! but any ideas ?? as they did not seem to find the problem...

Hi,

The clunking noise happend at first when I was turning the wheel to reverse out of my drive , then it was happening on turns like roundabouts and road turns.... so I then took it to the garage ..... any speed it happens!

They replace the drive shaft saying it was bent... still happening when I picked it up and drove it homel ast night- called the garage this morning taking it back on Monday! but they do not seem to know what it is . J

Worn splines on a driveshaft normally sound like a loud fast ticking. It normally affects the outside wheel on a full lock turn because that shaft is being pulled more. The more worn the faster the ticking as the teeth (splines) slip and click. When the steering is straight the shaft is fully 'in' and still gets a good enough grip to not slip.
Has the noise changed at all since the replacement?
Did your mechanics actually hear the sound themselves or just diagnose from the description of the symptoms?

I just noticed you said they say the driveshaft was bent?
Thats quite a hard thing to achieve in normal driving, have you hit a curb or something hard recently?
I'd have thought you'd be able to feel a wobble through the steering wheel if the shaft was actually bent. I bent a driveshaft on a classic 3L Scimitar and even though that was RWD and obviously different you could feel something was very wrong without going round a corner. and it makes the wheel look like its buckled as it turns.

am I the only one to notice that this may be better in the mk4 section? ;)

Hi,
Thank you Atlantia and Mat- Yes I believe this needs to go to the mark 4 section! anyway now we are here...
I questioned the driveshaft as I have not hit a kerb or anything, my steering was fine.... but they swear it was bent!!and said it had to be replaced . I still have the clunking and they said they will do the links and brushes and not charge me labour. I am a bit peeved as I do not think anything was wrong with the drive shaft.....but it is my word against theirs ! ( I did not ever feel a difference with the steering) or performance ... just this clunking when i went around corners or slight turns and potholes!
It is back in to get the brushes done and links this week I hope.

I have been told by a friend of mine that if my driveshaft had to be replaced as it was bent! (apparently) I would of known about it, with my steering being affected. My friend took my car for a drive to listen to the clanking, he drove over potholes, roundabouts bends etc , he said my steering was fine and that he feels my drive shaft had nothing wrong with it ! he has said to get back in touch with the garage ....he also looked under the car and checked C V joints etc, and felt he would of noticed had the drive shaft
been bent.

What do you guys think? feed back would give me more knowledge when I approach the garage.

sorry but you've had your pants pulled down there!
ill put money on it being inner wishbone bushes, most likely front from what you say!

drive shafts wont bend without being damaged if its fatige failure the garage should have reported the faulty part to seat for inspection!
