Clutch Pedal Problems

Hi all

Experienced a bit of a problem last night!!

I was approaching a busy junction last night in my V5, after engaging the clutch pedal it never returned and something broke from the end of the pedal. As you can imagine It was a bit of a concern!

Had to be towed home, my dad took a brief look at the clutch pedal assembly and was shocked to see how it all relys on a small piece of plastic. My car has covered 158k so I suppose it has a right to be a little poorly now and again.

I don't think luck was on my side last night though cause as I reached into the car to disengage the handbrake the whole handbrake cover came off in my hand and the button cover went flying and I can't find it. I'm having no luck at all with this car!

Anyone else had these problem or is it just me?

Well, something similar happened to me in a Mk2 Ibiza: clutch pedal went to the floor, I managed to pull in to the side (at the entrance to a roundabout!) and found a small bit of white plastic on the floor of the pedal box. What in fact had happened was that the metal box on the clutch pedal where this plastic part fits (it cushions the master cylinder push-rod) had come apart at the end, where a spot-weld had failed. The plastic bit popped out, propelled by the master cylinder pushrod feeding back the force from the clutch springs.

There is no room in the Ibiza footbox for more than a double-jointed midget, so it got consigned to the dealer, who took out the drivers seat to get enough access to change the clutch pedal. The force of the blow had also broken the elderly seal on the end of the master cylinder, which had to be changed too to stop hydraulic fluid leaking all over the drivers footwell. Clutch and brake share the same reservoir, so the warning sign was the brake-fluid low light coming on.

No comments on the clutch, but the handbrake cover comes off easy enough. Replaced mine with a leather one which clicks in place the same way that one pulled out. Replacement cover doesn't come with a new button though so do your best to find the old one (magnet on a flexible stick underneath the seats etc?).

Thanks Guys

Yeah muttley that sounds exactly what happened to mine, the white plastic part fell out due to the metal part which was supposed to hold it in bent and snapped. Luckily there is quite a bit of room in the toledo once some trim has been removed and my dad has created a new bracket which is actually better than the original design. My dad is a bit of an inspector gadget! I'm sure the design could of been much better in the first place but then i suppose it has coped with 158k.
