Hi all,

I've had some really strange noises from under the bonnet these last couple of weeks......

Basically its a scraping/knocking sound which always occurs when I dip the clutch, particularly when I am slowing down - only with the foot off the accelerator. I always notice it when I'm coming to a stop (everytime), especially when chugging along in traffic once I've dipped the clutch.

It to be rotational i.e. the more I slow down, the louder, clearer and slower it gets and when I'm nearly at a stop (2mph-ish), it starts to sound like something is about to burst through the bonnet. It doesn't seem to be very loud when I put the windows down in a quiet location, but I can hear it quite clearly over my music when on moderate volume.

It doesn't seem to do it when reversing, and if I put the gear in neutral when stationery, and lift up the clutch whilst revving I don't hear the sounds at all - only when slowing down.

I've done some 'googling' and it appears to me that it's either the clutch release bearing or the clutch plate? If it is the clutch release bearing, is there a lot of labour involved? If so, what would you expect it to cost, say at a dealer?

Regards,

Will.

The clutch release bearing is constant with engine speed so it generally wont slow down any less than engine tickover, could be a knackered/warped clutch friction plate or broken springs, either way its gearbox out job and a few hundred quid lighter in the bank!
