Code reader/diagnosis kit TCR light

Looking for a decent hand held diagnostic/fault code reader for MK1 LCR. TCR light comes on and will eventually go off by itself. Turns itself on and off intermittently.

Taken to two garages now and when plugged in to diagnostic equipment the lights either gone, it either corrects itself, or they can’t pinpoint what the actual fault or cause for the light to come on was. No other lights come on and as far as both garages are concerned everything functions and works as it should. Both garages did however mention when they plugged in various ABS fault codes come up but they don’t believe this would be related to what the problem is. Was hoping to keep the kit in the car and when the light comes on next pull over and plug in straight away to “catch” it.

Side note I have read a few threads that state this could be related to the MAF. Read that’s some people have replaced the MAF and the issues disappear.

any advice/recommendation greatly appreciated!

Hey buddy, The only real diagnostic software for the more advanced codes on these engines is VCDS. Most generic code readers can only read OBD2 faults (basic, emmisions related codes) It's not cheap and you will need a compatable laptop. https://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VCV23.html

As for the fault itself, a fault with the ABS would almost cetainly cause a fault with the TCS system too. One of the inputs for the traction system is from the same wheel speed sensors used for the ABS. Does your ABS light come on and go off again at start up?

I would suggest finding a VAG specialist or a different garage. A lot of garages are great for replacing shocks/brakes/cambelts etc, yet they know next to nothing about how the control units and other electrical systems in the vehicles actually work.
