Hi all

I was wondering if anyone has ever had this problem. Recently in the mornings when I start my car it finds it hard turn over and for a few seconds runs very lumpy. Also I get a knocking noise during the period it is running lumpy. However if the engine is warm I don't seem to get this problem, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what it could be?

Thanks

Ade

P.S. it has recently had a service, I understand it probably isn't related but I thought I would share that anyway.

P.P.S it's a Leon Diesel FR 57 plate. I think it's the PD model.

Partner had the same problem and thought it might have been low oil. Checked oil, it was fine. Left it over night and was grand....

Sent from my fingers using Muscle power HD

Hmmm. It has been doing it for a few mornings now. I will check the oil when the engine is cold. Could it be something else. I have had my injectors changed so I doubt it's that.

Silly question, but your letting the glow plugs warms up first aren't you, before you turn the key?

I would say.

The oil level is too low.

The oil is of the wrong grade (who serviced the car and did they use PD compatible oil)?

If the car has high mileage and the other 2 things are in order you could have a worn cam (search for PD chocolate cam).

Maybe you have a problem with the engine timing (did you have the cam belt replaced on the service, it could be a tooth out)?

It's probably low oil level though.

Seems to be a trait of the pd170 when cold starting in temps below 5 degrees.
Do a search on google but lots say its only happened since injector replacement.
My dads and my brothers pd170's both start like a sack of shite when the temp is low.
Both have been in the dealer and no faults found.

maybe its the flywheel because i know my flywheel is faulty and its doing it. 140 engine

It's still doing it. I just went to the petrol station and after I filled up it was wasn't turning over. I stopped trying and left it a few minutes and tried again, It struggled but eventually it started up. I have read earlier it could be a crankshaft sensor. I would take it to a garage near me who specialise in VW audi but they seem to be very expensive! Does anyone have a VAG come in the Cardiff area that might be willing to help?

Check the heater plugs sounds like one could be loose of broken, also as mentioned before make sure the correct oil was used when serviced.

I will double check the oil used tomorrow. What oil should it be? Also where would the heat plugs be located?

Could it be the earth as I had a starting problem but when I made a stronger earth for mine it solved it. Its worth a try as it'll only cost a few quid to make am earth and just join it from battery to cars body

Don't know if it applies to diesel but could it be fuel filter?
Or automatic choke, starving of fuel until its warmed up?

hi folks my fr tdi has the same issues. been down to my local independent vag specialist, he says issue is with intercooler getting water in it which freezes in cold temp. this means car cant "breathe" for a time so struggles. big issue apparently and he says there are lots of problems in america with this. he has a passat in his garage just now with the same issue. vw have apparently redesigned the intercooler with smaller bore pipework to cure the issue. he told me depending on engine type looking at about £300 to fix.
