cooling fan query

Hi all,

Over the last couple of days I have noticed something weird with my car. ('99 2.0 16v Cupra Sport)
When the sun eventually disappeared and the rain came and it was time for me to use my heaters, but there was no hot air coming out at all even when the engine got up to temperature, I have made sure there is coolant in the radiator and still no heat.
Then today after I got in from work I parked up, knocked the engine off and I could hear the fan going for around 1 min then cut off, now I dont know if it was always supposed to do that but it has started to and usually doesnt. When driving the engine temp gauge is at the half way mark where it usually is and the trip comp says the engine oil is at a steady 86 degrees so no signs of overheating or anything.
Could someone please shed some light on the subject and tell me if it is anything i need to worry about?

Dave.

Sounds like the engine side of things is good, could be a problem with your heater controls or heater matrix. Was common on Fiesta's for the linkage between the control on the dash and the valve which lets hot water in to the matrix to fail.

Might be as simple as that.

oh right cool, do you think i need to worry about the fan going excessively? approx how much would a heater matrix set me back? and is it an easy job? if you have any idea of course?lol
cheers

Yep agree with Paul with that one! And the fan will run on when you switch the engine off to cool it down so don't worry about that!

Don't worry about the fan mine does it too if its had a bit of a stop start journey at this time of year with the warmer temps, my old 16v did it also.

Dunno how much a heater matrix if as its one MK2 job i haven't had. I would take off the heater controls panel and see if its all connected up as it should be first and go from there.

hi, since i posted my last comment my engine temp guage did actually shoot up, was once again driving home from work, got stuck in a slow moving jam then my temp needle risen to just over 3/4's of the way, started panicing a bit coz i didnt fancy breaking down on an already jammed up dual carriage way but once i got going again it settled back down.

had my head under the bonnet and traced all the coolant pipes back from the pump to the rad and noticed a nice split in the bottom hose about an inch wide, so i am guessing thats my problem, so its now off the road until i get a new pipe.

thanks for the input guys, if it still aint right after the pipe replacement ill give yas a holla!

Did it work?

This evening I have just had the same problem! When I bought it my car didn't have an air filter and I put one in and changed the cooling sensor and thought all was well. But in traffic this evening, the car heat shot up to red and the fan is now on alot! Not using coolant though. Was intending to change the MAF sensor, but would this be what's causing it? Please help as I'm supposed to be driving it abroad next week!

hi mate, my car is still off the road, im waiting for my pipe to arrive at jennings tommorrow, but once i fit it and test it ill let you know how it goes. but at this moment in time the only advice i could give is to trace your pipes and make sure there is no splits and make sure all of the sensors are connected properly.

But as I say i will let you know tommorrow.

My fan stays on after engine turn off now and then too, checked everything and nothing is out of place, cant see it as a massive problem really, it just seems too be whenever my engine is really hot, must be a common thing with the Ibiza's, dunno though . . . .

well, i have now sorted the pipe and tested it, and the car seems to be running fine again, the fan doesnt even come on anymore after i turn the engine off.

what controlls the fan over-run? on a mk3 golf abf, there is a temp sendor on the inlet manifold between runners 2 and 3.
i cant see anything on the seat?

 cold air coming out of the blowers when you want hot is usualy a sign of air in the system...
