at the weekend i changed out the coolant and put in some new G12 plus. now i then had the car running for about 30 mins and it would not bring the cooling fans in and the temperature guage sat on 90c. it didnt seem to matter how long i waited it just refused to bring them on. the only way i could get them to come on was to turn on the aircon, then both fans ran. i have heard theres a problem with these fans, something to do with the resistor pack in one of the fans, im hoping its not this. the only other thing to note is that the temperature on the guage didnt ever go above 90c, so maybe there is enough cooling just with the radiator on these engines.

Were you just idling? Diesels are very efficient at idle, and generate relatively little heat. You should take it for a run. load the engine to get it working harder.

Turning on the air conditioning should bring in both fans at low speed, so as to get air flowing across the condenser mounted in front of the radiator, which is where the heat extracted from the car gets disposed of. As long as both fans were going constantly at relatively low speed (not noisy) then that is expected. If the fans were going at high speed, and switching on and off, then that is the symptom of the commonest fan failure.
