Cupra 5f Sub8 brakes overheating one side?

Hi all,

Last weekend I went to the Nordschleiffe with my car and used it for some laps. After a fast lap my brake discs were making a ticking noice. I spoke to some one who also owned a cupra but fully modified everything and he told me that when cupra develophed the sub 8 brakes they mirrored the brake discs. That means that the right side of the car would stay hot longer. The right side kept ticking because of the heat much longer then the left side.
He told me that there are special after market discs that solves this.

What do you guys recommend? I am running Ferrodo ds2500 pads with zimmerman discs.

That's correct. The air vents in the disks are mirrored and so they are not heated equally. To be honest though, I also use the 370x32 Zimmermann disks and after a track day both sides were almost equally hot. It also has to do with the track I guess.

Yeah, Audi used a directional disc for the brakes, but as you say mirrored it for the opposite side. You'd think they'd of just had the central veins non directional if they were wanting to save money. These discs were fitted to much more expensive cars (RS6) too!!

A lot of people seem to go for the Reyland setup. They don't list them for Seat, but they're the same as the TTRS ones:

When Seat 'developed' the sub 8 - they just used the Audi TTRS brakes. These are nice brakes with composite discs (alloy bell pinned to the cast iron friction surface) and they have curved internal veins however as you mention they are NOT handed left and right.
Disc venting works as a centrifugal pump to move cooling air through the centre of the disc radially out. The vast majority of car brake discs have straight veins (simpler/cheaper tooling) - so it doesn't matter which side these go - however a centrifugal pump is less efficient at moving air with straight veins.
Curved veins in a centrifugal pump make it more efficient at moving air (better cooling) however it now becomes directional.
It really frustrates me that they go to all the effort of making some lovely discs but then don't bother to make an opposite version - the ONLY reason is to make the bean counters happy! Mercedes do the same, have curved vein NONE handed discs on their cars. You need to go to the full fat V8 AMG to get handed discs. Audi have handed discs with their larger RS cars (except the small TTRS and RS3) Same story with BMW M cars.

To get some handed discs is going to cost a lot. If this is just a road car with a occasional track day I would find it hard to justify!

The Sub 8 uses the same discs as the TTRS - The RS3 has different discs - although still 370x32 they are a different height.

The RS6 has handed directional discs LH & RH. These are not the same as the Leon Sub 8.

Wasn't aware the RS3 were different 👍

I got the impression/info the earlier RS6's (C7 I think it was) had the same issue on the larger discs. I was in a garage with an owner. He'd cooked one side on a track day and was saying the ventilation was wrong just on one side. He'd had to have his discs skimmed due to pad deposits. He had a bit of a rant about it.

Oh well, everyday is a school day :)

Yes you are right - regarding RS6 - as you say everyday's a school day :)
I double checked and the 390x36 RS6 discs are not handed  what rubbish! The carbon ceramic discs are handed.
E63AMG has handed discs as does the F90 M5.

The only 2x Audi's I can see with handed discs (ignoring carbon ceramics) are the E-tron GT which is just a Porsche Taycan (All/most Porsche's have handed discs) and the Audi TT 3.2 VR6 which shares the same discs as the Golf R32 which has composite handed discs. Even the R8 doesn't have handed discs!

Haha, no worries, life would be boring if we all got things right all the time.

But you reminded me about the other thing they were ranting about, the Carbon Cermamics being needed to get handed discs. Forgot about that bit. Yyou'd think an R8 would get handed discs!

What do Lamborghini get (on their none ceramics!?)

Just checked; All Gallardo's with iron discs are NONE directional! except the Superleggera which has handed iron discs!
