Major dilemma....

I have due to arrive on Friday 30th September a lovely Leon SC 1.4 ACT FR Titanium in Red with full link and Convenience pack.

I had not driven the 1.4 but all reviews and numbers were good and I previously had an FR 150 TDI 13 plate.

I thought let's get to the dealer whilst still in my 14 day cooling off period to make sure all is good as entering a 48 month lease deal. Loved the car on Road test but then went out in the Cupra, oh my word..... love the car in every way.

Looked at cancelling the FR but appears no Cupras about according to dealer and a few lease enquiries, quoting 12-15 weeks wait. Monthly payments only jump by £100 and I get 5 days which with 2 kids would be better.

Question is...... will I be happy to run the SC knowing saving £150 a month with fuel difference etc. Or will I be missing the taste of power I have just had.

FR/ CUPRA owners please help.

If I cancel now I lose a great deal on SC, £168 per month 3/48 8k.

Obviously everyone is going to tell you the cupra is awesome... hardly comparing apples with apples.

£150/month is a pretty substantial amount of money though, guess it depends what you want... I kinda thought I should have bought an FR but then I wanted something cheap to run overall and I think generally I got a nice cheap deal on my current car and it's got all the spec I wanted on it... but then I get the urge for something actually fast but it usually passes and I remember I probably can't realistically afford it.

If you have lots of money and can afford the extra cost though why the hell not?

Think I was taken in by a bargain on the SC but now thinking why play safe and boring?????

Performance from the 1.4 seemed good when worked. Cupra was just on tap all the time, was Dsg mind....

Aren't you comparing 150bhp with 290bhp though here? I don't think the DSG is the issue.

True, just not having to change a gear.
Apparently the same company I'm getting the SC with can get a 3dr Cupra Black in Nov but payment jumps to £273.....
Arghhhhhh he what to do.

Indeed, Wife quite happy to get the Titanium, run that whilst waiting for face-lift and cupra shortage to end and then let her run the Titanium and I will jump into a Cupra!!
Works for me.

I've had a 280 DSG for about 2.6 years, sold it last month while I wait for the Cupra facelift.

Currently driving the 1.4 Titanium so can do a back-to-back.

I was surprised at how pokey the 1.4 engine is. The car handles well enough and I like the interior, although the seats are slippy if you put things on them, compared to the Cupra's (alcantara).

The economy hasn't been vastly different, but I think that's because I've found myself getting frustrated with the lower power (compared to the Cupra), so I'm wringing its neck a bit more.

As others have said it comes down to money and if you think you'll regret not getting the car you probably really want.

The Cupra as far as I am concerned is a sublime car in all regards, power, handling, looks, running costs for what you get. I miss mine big time and can't wait for the new one.

Had I not had a Cupra before I would have probably been happy with the 1.4 and for most people it will have more than enough power. I am also missing the DSG though, changing gear is becoming a pain in the rear.

Just my view, but I'm bound to be biased towards the Cupra having had one for a good amount of time. The FR is still a great car.

Cheers, as I cannot get the Cupra now other than a 3dr I will get the 1.4 on Friday and run that for now. Don't get me wrong I am looking forward to the 1.4, but as you say if I had not driven a Cupra I would have been more than happy. I hope the 1.4 can get mid 40's on fuel. Face-lift apparently may get electronic handbrake. Hope it goes keyless start too!!

The exhaust tone and clap on the 290 is worth paying £100 per month more for alone!!! Bucket seats on the black look gorgeous too..... I need a Cupra....

Arghhhhhh
Still looking at lease deals, same company I'm getting Titanium with apparently can supply a 3dr Cupra Black in manual for £266 per month over 48.
Soooooo tempted now to drop the Titanium and get the Cupra. Or do I wait for Face-lift????????? Arghhhhh

I have an FR 1.4 150, i was going to get a 290 black, but waiting for the facelift now.

my commute is 40mins half motorway, half b roads, most drive in sport mode, i get about 42 mpg per trip

I got the 125bhp 1.4 FR in February, been happy out with it since then but I too made the mistake of driving a DSG 290 a few weeks back and I cant stop thinking about it. I'm going to look into possibly selling my FR next year and picking up a 1 year old 290 on the cheap.

Have you prioritised your requirements and done a cost/benefit analysis.
For example, with a family, 5 doors is probably more important than 0 to 60 in 5.8 secs.
Again load carrying capacity might suggest an ST.
DSG is subjective but very important as it effects the whole driving experience, personally I hate it.
What I normally do is determine what I needtohave (not much), what I'd liketohave (quite a lot) and what would be nicetohave (in my dreams)
then look for the best price and then confirm finally there isn't a more pressing need like a new roof or cosmetic surgery.
Neither of your options seem to meet what seem to be your real needs.
The ST FR TDI 184 PS is what I'd go for.
It has the right blend of convenience, performance, startup cost and long term economy.
Also the nocost colour, wheels and seats are nice enough not to need changing.

By the tone of your posts, you know want the CUPRA. Don't regret not buying it.

The problem was driving the Cupra I know. I was happy to compromise with a 3dr SC ad kids are old enough to climb in and out ok. Now I'm thinking I'm happy to pay £100 a month more to climb into a Cupra. Waiting on a few dealers coming back to me. Need to decide today!!!
