Hey guys,

Last week I was driving home and my car was smoking quite a bit, the day after the smoke seemed to of cleared and I was driving to work then out of nowhere I started hearing this loud tapping noise (like something hitting the top of my engine) anyway it turns out that I have dropped a valve :( mechanic says the cylinder head is going to be looked at by a local machining company but if it’s a no hoper new ones are about £1k! Well....I may as well get a second hand engine for that...my question is does anyone know where I would start to look? Tried eBay but there are none :(

Cheers, Dave

Upon further inspection, cams are also screwed :( Current estimate to fix £1k - machined head replacement cams and time to do it all :(

Edit * Would it be wise to add uprated cams while its all in bits or is there more to it than just sticking them in?

Depends how much you can pick a second hand engine up for, and how much it would cost to fit it. The problem I would have with getting a second hand engine would be lack of service history and no idea how it had been treated. I would also guess that one from the scrap yard would have done a high milage.

Any one know how much an engine would be from a scrap yard?

Try Motors in motion for a new head or engine. Had the valve damaged the piston/bore at all?

Send me a sample of your used engine oil (you can suck it out through the dipstick hole with a shringe and airline hose or via the sump plug)

That should give you a good idea on component wear. ;)

Does anyone know what type of metal are the cams are made out of?

Someone will but the cam lobes or followers are known to wear

It's easy to remove the cam cover and take a peek at the cam (turn the engine using crank attachment on left hand side of engine, opposite side from gearbox) - The cover comes off with only about 12 bolts. :)

Looks like this then:
